What do I need to Join a Ski Team?

How to convince my mom to let me join the ski team?

  • Hey, I'm a 15 year old guy in Grade 11 (And yes, I am 15) and my school has a Ski/Snowboard team (We're in Canada, and the closest ski hill is only a half hour away) I'd say that I'm a "decent" skier (I have a "blue" status when I go on ski trips) and its been years since I last went skiing and I want to return to that activity...get to enjoy the thrills of skiing again. The problem is, my mother is a bit of a control freak. The activity is competitive skiing and my mom is afraid that I will get hurt. I agree with her in the sense that there is a chance that I could get hurt, but it would be nothing that I haven't already experienced. I've tripped, fell, flipped, nearly crashed into a tree, and was chased by a few annoying school bullies a couple of times, all while skiing. I left unscathed and enjoyed the rest of the day on the hills and/or inside the Lodge. Another factor would be prices (costs about $70 for a yearly membership fee, uses school equipment) How can I convince her to let me join the ski team? The only sports that I am good at are the "extreme environment" sports such as swimming, skiing, and marksmanship. I am not good at all with sports such as basketball and soccer and I want to prove to my friends (many of them are school athletes of some form already) that I can play sports and I can be as good as, or even better than, the other athletes at school. So yeah, how can I convince my mom? Also, if all else fails and she won't let me do competitive skiing, how can I get her to let me do "Ground Crew" (the guys who support the athlete, makes sure skis are on, catering, maintenance)? Thanks

Well, first of all your mom does sound like a control freak because she's acting like competitive skiing is the only sport you can get hurt in. You can get hurt in ANY sport, even ping pong! You also need to realize that competitive can be more dangerous than a leisurely ski because your aim is to go fast, not go at a comfortable speed. I think it would be a great experience for you, but it's not like you can just pick up those skis and hit the slopes again, you will have to relearn how to ski. You can break every bone in your body, easily suffer a concusion, go into acoma, break your neck which can lead to paralization, the list goes on of the possible injuries you can suffer. Not to stray you away, you just need to know it's a lot more than just the occasional 'trip' and 'fall'. Don't do this because you want to show off for your friends, you should only do this if you have true passion and you really do want to be a good skier, because I can assure you you'll be bored as hell if you go out there trying to learn something you didn't care about. About the cost, $70 isn't that hard to raise, heck you could just do some chores, wash some peoples cars, shovel a bit of snow and take a dip out of the money you might get for christmas and you have well over $70. If you just want to be "ground crew", I have no idea why your mother would oppose to that. It's safe and you learn how to be on a team. Again, I stress the importance of knowing the dangers about skiing before you go, and decide if you're doing this for yourself or for your friends.

Well, you should probably start skiing again before you join, to see if you really like it and to get some basic skills back. Once you show your mom that you are capable of skiing well in hard environments or fast speeds, try and ask her again. You should also see if you can watch a ski team practice or even join in 1 practice for free and see if it's what you really want to do! Hope I helped!

Dude.... Do it! Is it like a race team or a freeride team (gotta say, freerides the best) My mom was a bit of a freaker about it when I started, she got over it tho... Until I broke my back haha but its all good now (didn't hurt, I can still walk and ski and all that good stuff) but shes still cool about it. Some main points you could argue are: - Its a HIGH SCHOOL ski team! Nothin like you'd do if you were where I live or if you were on your own and you'd make sure to be extra careful - You always have fun when you go - The social aspect (you know how your team turns into a second family) - You now how to handle yourself when you go skiing Tell her the one thing all moms want to hear besides the fact that their little baby is gonna be safe: "Mom, I will be able to keep up my grades!" That right there is key! Also, bring her out on the hill one day (if she skis) and show her that you know how to stay in control and you can be careful and you will listen to your coaches A little side story here, il just make a little list of all the stupid sh!t ive done in the past 2 years: - Broke part of my back - Almost tore my meniscus on a rail - Almost smashed my face on a cliff twice in the same day - Bashed my head on a rail - Ate sh!t on the mogul course - Hit my arm on a cliff - The many, many, many very colorful bruises that make me look like some sort of paint mess All that stupid stuff ive done that I can remember, and im still totally fine :D Don't do the Ground Crew thing, that's pretty much being their servant, and they will totally abuse all the power! That's kinda lame to, but you can get her to let you do that by saying that you will have lots of responsibility and you will still be part of the team (that will show your determination to get on the team and she might let you just cus you're soo determined, so make it convincing!)
