What are some great conversation starters?

What are some good conversation starters for my friend?

• i havent gotten to see him a whole lot lately but we are in summer school together now so we've talked a bit. today i was wondering around the school by myself during one of the breaks and he came up to me and started walking around with me. that was the first time since he's been in summer school since monday, so i'm thinking we might be talking more during the breaks since neither of us have a lot of people to talk to besides, haha. he's quiet. at least around me, haha. we walked for 10 minutes and didn't have any big conversations, but i tried. i'm not so good at starting conversations and i don't want to sound stupid in front of him either, that's why i'm asking here for some ideas. good conversation starters??

  Ask him things about himself. People are most comfortable talking about themselves. I'm a horrible conversation starter, too, and pretty bad at conversations in general. But I find it easier to talk about myself, because otherwise my responses come out in one-word answers. It's easier when someone's asking me something, and I can explain it with more detail than just one word... so they can agree/disagree, and spur a conversation off of it.
