How do I get my mom to let me cut my own hair?
-
I am a scene girl at heart and have all the elements to be scene. I have the makeup, some of the clothes, I listen to the music, I wear the bows, but all I need is that Rockin' hair to make it all go together. I've spent hours on YouTube watching How-To videos on how to cut your own hair and have finally figured out that all I really need and want is a fringe, or a side-sweep in other words. With my own money I planned on buying a razor-comb and told my best friend my plans. She told me that she would love to help me cut my hair. I've been to the hairdresser and shown her exactly what i want about 3 times and every time, I left unhappy with my flat, 2-layer hair. I asked my friends what their thoughts were on my fringe idea and they said I should do it, it's exactly what I need. So when I got home, I told my dad my plans. He said that he agreed with me, a fringe would be perfect for my hair, so I waited for my mom to come home to tell her what I had decided to do. But I didn't even get to finish explaining what a fringe was by the time she had yelled,"NO!" I asked her why and all she said was that I was not going to cut my own hair. So I told her my best friend (who she is always saying I should be more like) was going to help me. But she got even more enraged and I was sent to my room. Now, it's been about an hour and my mom came in to check if I had done my homework (which I did... I'm a good kid I can't see why she gets mad at me all the time, it makes me cry at night a lot) before she left I asked her what her reasons were for saying no and all she was that she wasn't going to let my friend cut my hair and then she left. I called for her to come back but she wouldn't. My dad heard me, though, and came to see what i wanted. I told him what happened and I told him about my problems at the hairdresser's. I said that I could cut it myself if my friend wasn't allowed to and he said that was even worse. So now I'm back to square 1 and I honestly don't know what to do... Please don't leave an answer like,"You don't need to cut your hair" or anything like that because that's not what I spent a half-hour typing my hands off for. All I want is a convincing argument or SOMETHING to help my plight.

Answer:
I'm sorry to say that some moms want full control of how their children look. You could be the best well behaved kid in the world and I doubt that would change your moms mind. My mom was the same way. She had me dressing like a boy. I'm female. She always kept my hair short like a boy. The stylist would always shave my hair on the sides too at my moms insisting. I was always mistaken for a boy too. Even as a teenager I had no control over my hair. When I was married at 18, I grew it long. ; ) It still pretty long now. I rarely cut it except once a year & I donate my hair to a place that makes wigs for those with cancer. Other moms do not care what their kids do with their hair. As a mom I can say that once a mom makes up her mind she usually it not going to change it. Personally, I don't think it is worth the time or energy in demanding my kids wear their hair a certain way. As long as it is washed, brushed and nothing wild like a mohawk or something then I'm ok with it.

I'm not going to say don't do it. What I will say is everything looks easy on YouTube. Before I do something I always look on YouTube, and I never get it right the first time. She probably doesn't want you to incase you really mess up your own hair. I tried to cut my own bangs, and just kept getting them shorter and shorter because they wouldn't turn out even. Afterwords I cried for an hour because the turned out above my eyebrows. Just try a different hair stylist. I was scene in high school, and went to 3 hairdressers before I got what I originally wanted. Just tell them you want an emo haircut
Just say... "Mom, I'm getting older and my style is changing. I'm growing up and I need you to respect that. I really want to get my hair cut like____insert___ because I think it looks pretty and would help me express my style." Don't whine or get mad, just breathe and find ways that it will help you. Don't beg, suggest and ask. Good luck (:
If you really want to, you might have to just do it anyway. Make sure your mom understands that having scene hair isn't going to change the fact that you're a good kid who does her homework or anything. You're not changing to fit in with anyone else, you're doing it because you want to. Tell her it would raise your confidence etc.
