How do I write a song?

  • At my school we are entering the Arts festival and we must sing a original song or a non original song and they say if you win then you will go to nationals and if you win that then you get a scholarship in a Arts collage and everyone at my school has to do it,but i'm doing a original song because they say most people win by doing that because other people use other artist songs but anyway my girlfriend told me if I want to write a hit song I need to go deep in myself and write a song about a life changing experience but I have no idea what she is saying How do you get started on writing a song?or at least an idea (P.s we go to an performing arts school)

I find it helps to write the lyrics first, to get a sort of emotional context for the music, and start from there. I pick a key that fits the mood of the lyrics, then write a few melodies in that key and play around with some chords. Then you narrow it down to a few melodies/ chord progressions, harmonize wherever applicable, and splice it together. Add in the lyrics and you're good to go!
