How much emphasis do they put on High School grades?

Should I go back to my old school?

  • I transfered to a different school because my old school hosted a hostile environment. Even my English teacher would bully me. No one really treated me with respect, and the students thought they were so superior to me that I didn't even deserve to talk to them. Some teachers would look for any excuse to punish me, and they didn't care if I cried (I cried once, but that was only once). The school had mostly white students, and I was one of probably three black students in the class. I hated it there. I got straight A's, though. They loved to give out tons of assignments and tested students like crazy. Some days, all I would do is go from class to class to class and take test after test after test. I'm now at a school with a black majority. The teachers are nicer. The guidance counselor is actually trying to help me. What I don't like most about this school is that nothing gets graded. The first semester (I'm in my junior year of high school) is almost over, and I only have 3 grades in for my classes. And, I'm rounding up. In some of my classes, the teachers only put one grade in, and that one assignment is my grade in the class. And my guidance counselor told me, "That's what they do in college." Well, we're in high school; grade us like we're in high school because that's where we are and college is the goal, not the reality. I'm an A student. I have been since the district started the A-F scale in third grade. On report cards throughout my entire life, the most I've gotten was 2 Bs (in a year). I checked my progress report, and I have 3 B's as of right now this quarter. And it's because the only things that were graded are literally just one test and an essay (and sometimes 1-3 homework assignments). School has been in session for over a month now. I know if I took these same courses at my old school, I would have A's right now. And don't think, "oh, her old school must be badder than her new school." My new school is usually a C or B school (B school on a good day). My old school was an A school. And my old school prepared me just fine for my AP exams---I've always gotten 4's and 5's. Never a 3.
