How to check if a passport will work?

  • Besides booking an out of the country trip and finding out at the port of entry/exit. Is there a website where one can input passport numbers and verify if a passport is valid? We are planning a trip as a group and a friend who currently holds a passport has concerns that an old tax debt with the IRS may have caused a hold to be placed on his passport. What reasons would a passport be placed on hold? How do we double check the status? Thanks,
