How long does it take to get a work permit?

  • im 16 but people say i need a workers permit to get a job

  • Answer:

If you are a US citizen or legal permanent resident, and you're talking about work permits under state child labor laws, those under 18 must obtain state work permits. You get the application from your high school guidance counselor, school verifies you are a student in good standing. Your parents must sign their permission for you to work - they need to produce their identification, proof they are your parents, and proof of your age, and sign before a state labor dept official or some states accept notary public. If school is out for summer, you and your parents should take all documentation to your state's Dept of Labor office for application. If you are not a US citizen or legal permanent resident, foreign minor children ar strictly prohibited from working, and are not eligible for any sort of employment visa under US law. If, for example, you are on a dependent visa of a parent on an employment visa, and you work illegally, it is grounds for revoking your parent's employment visa and all dependent visas under that visa.
