if you are an American, you'll have to either show up in person at a passport office in a major us city or hire an expediting service at your expense. the 'usual' State Department processing time si said to be 60 days. check online for Passport issuing offices, documentation requirements, and expediting services. if you're a citizen somewhere else, you'll have to inquire of your country's government -- while basic information is probably online, requirements vary.

@ Spock: Renewal does Not necessarily require a face to face appearance. This is only for a First-Time passport. Renewal is about $25. Go to travel.state.gov for the state dept's website and info on this.
