Answer:
If you leave the U.S. for Venezuela without your green card, the airline will not going board you when you try to return. You need the green card to get back into the U.S. If you apply for a replacement of the green card using form I-90, you would be eligible for temporary evidence of lawful permanent resident status, and you can use the temporary evidence for every purpose that the actual green card can be used for, including returning to the U.S. after a trip to South America. If you go to Venezuela without the temporary evidence of LPR status, you will need a transportation letter issued by the U.S.embassy in Caracas before you can come back. Upon your return, Customs & Border Protection will compel you to apply for a replacement card so there's very little sense in going to Venezuela without applying for the replacement first. The transportation letter from the embassy in Caracas is not free. In order to obtain a transportation letter to return to the United States you must make an appointment by writing an email to the Immigrant Visa Section at [email protected] You have to bring the following documents to your appointment: 1. Completed Form I-90 Application Form (available at www.uscis.gov under “Immigration Forms”) 2. A valid passport in good physical condition (minimum 6 months validity) 3. Valid airline ticket specifying date of travel. 4. Proof of Alien Residence “A-number”. 5. Three recent color photographs that are 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 cm.) in size, with no head covering, and showing a full, front-face view against a white background, without earrings or eyeglasses. 6. Processing fee of U.S. $165.00 or the equivalent in local Bolivares currency. 7. If applicable, a police report documenting the circumstances of how the Permanent Resident card was stolen. 8. Proof of U.S. residency status, if possible. 9. Proof of presence in the U.S. within the last year, if possible.
