How To Apply For Passport?

I'm a immigrant with a permanent residence card, how does have to take before I apply for a us passport?

  • I have a permanent residence card, a liberian passport, a military ID a social security card, and a driver's license. I legally came to the U.S in 2006. I don't have my liberian birth certificate because I somehow left it, or lost it at the chicago airport when they were checking my papers. I checked with the airport but nothing turned up. but anyway, I'm now married to a U.S citizen and we have a son. I'm trying to get passports for my son and I because my husband and I plan to go and visit my mother back home in the near future. but today I went to the post office to apply but the clerk told me in order for me to get a passport, I have to be a natural born citizen which I find pretty confusing because I don't believe everyone with a U.S passport was born here. anyway I need some answers as to how long i have to wait to get a passport. I do know that I have to wait a long time to receive a green card but I Only want a passport for now. and I want to know what documents I will need to get the passport.

  • Answer:

You don't require a passport. You can use your LIBERIAN passport & green card to leave & enter the US when traveling anywhere provided that you meet the immigration requirements to the country you are traveling to.I would also be careful in trying to applying for a US passport due to it being a felony of a false claim to US citizenship. In order to apply for a US passport you must be a US citizen. To do this you must apply for an N-400 form to USCIS provided that you have been married to your US citizen spouse for at least 3 years.Only when your application is approved & after you have taken the Oath of Allegiance to the US constitution will you be considered a US citizen thus being able to apply for a US passport.

You don't have to be a natural born citizen, but you do need to be a citizen to get a US passport. You can get a passport for your son,but you will have to travel with your passport from your own country.

3 years after perm res (marriage) or 5 years employment, this is how long you need to be in usa legally to apply for citizenship, you can apply for passport same day you take citizenship oath

Check the rules to see when you can apply for cirizenship http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf

You cannot get a US passport because you are not a US citizen. Until you become one, you'll have to use the passport from the country of your birth.
