I'm a immigrant with a permanent residence card, how does have to take before I apply for a us passport?
-
I have a permanent residence card, a liberian passport, a military ID a social security card, and a driver's license. I legally came to the U.S in 2006. I don't have my liberian birth certificate because I somehow left it, or lost it at the chicago airport when they were checking my papers. I checked with the airport but nothing turned up. but anyway, I'm now married to a U.S citizen and we have a son. I'm trying to get passports for my son and I because my husband and I plan to go and visit my mother back home in the near future. but today I went to the post office to apply but the clerk told me in order for me to get a passport, I have to be a natural born citizen which I find pretty confusing because I don't believe everyone with a U.S passport was born here. anyway I need some answers as to how long i have to wait to get a passport. I do know that I have to wait a long time to receive a green card but I Only want a passport for now. and I want to know what documents I will need to get the passport.

Answer:
You don't require a passport. You can use your LIBERIAN passport & green card to leave & enter the US when traveling anywhere provided that you meet the immigration requirements to the country you are traveling to.I would also be careful in trying to applying for a US passport due to it being a felony of a false claim to US citizenship. In order to apply for a US passport you must be a US citizen. To do this you must apply for an N-400 form to USCIS provided that you have been married to your US citizen spouse for at least 3 years.Only when your application is approved & after you have taken the Oath of Allegiance to the US constitution will you be considered a US citizen thus being able to apply for a US passport.

You cannot get a US passport because you are not a US citizen. Until you become one, you'll have to use the passport from the country of your birth.
