Answer:
He just has to go to the british consulate in the states that is closest to him with proof of his british birth and get a new passport. you never loose it so he just has to get a new passport and the brits wont ask him to give up his american passport. I am an american who hold both british and american passports (citizenship). I got my british through the male 1st generation policy. My dad was born in the UK and immigrated to a british commonwealth so I was eligable for british citizenship and applied so now I have both Addition: Have him go to the consulates website and schedule an appointment because they only see you by appointment and it takes a while to get an appointment and tell him to plan spending the entire dat at the place they don't go out of their way to speed things along When he is on the website it will walk him through a series of questions to determine who he needs to see for what he needs to have done and at the end it will give him seveal options of appointments dates once he chooses a date it will give him a list of document he needs to bring for proof. ADDITION: the only time the US has a real problem with someone holding US and another passort is if the person decides to serve in the other countries military. That would be grounds for loosing your us passport. other than that it is not frowned on

Did he physically walk into the British Embassy and renounce his citizenship before a consular officer? If not, then chances are he still has British citizenship. In that case he would only need apply for a new British passport. The UK allows dual-citizenship so it would be okay for him to use both. If his children are all under 18 he should also apply to get them a British passport. They would also have dual-citizenship. His American wife would need to apply for a visa.

Get a new passport ..you never lost your citizenship You can do most of it online ,....not cheap though http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/

Most countries (including the UK) do not accept the verbal renunciation during the Oath Ceremony for US Citizenship, so if that's all he did, he still has his UK citizenship. His family will need to go through UK Immigration. He should contact the nearest British Consulate and apply for his passport and see what he needs to do to get his family their visas.
