Illegals Urged to Boycott 2010 Census http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/dpp/news/Illegals_Urged_to_Boycott_2010_Census_062909 Updated: Monday, 29 Jun 2009, 6:28 PM EDT Published : Monday, 29 Jun 2009, 6:12 PM EDT * Amanda Davis Amanda Davis * Edited By: Leigha Baugham | myfoxatlanta.com ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - Some leaders in the Latino community made a radical call for immigration reform Monday. The community leaders are urging undocumented immigrants to boycott the 2010 census, saying it's unfair. Federal funding and apportionment of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are based on a census of the population every 10 years. The National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders, a conservative group of evangelicals behind the boycott, has asked undocumented immigrants not to fill out census forms unless Congress passes what it called "genuine" immigration reform. The community leaders claim the being counted and not represented isn't fair. "It doesn't make any sense, in some way it is immoral that we are counting 12 million undocumented immigrants who have no benefit at all financially speaking," said Reverend Miguel Rivera of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders. Rev. Rivera admitted that telling undocumented immigrants not to participate is a radical step, but said it was the only way to make a political point to push immigration reform. "We are getting nothing at all. Why not fix this issue, have legislation for every undocumented, no undocumented, and everybody can be counted and everybody will have a fair share and fair representation in congress?" asked Rev. Rivera. Other Latino leaders said boycotting the census will only backfire. "When we boycott the census we are in essence boycotting schools in our community, and representation in our federal government for those two reasons alone we need to make sure every single person is accounted for," said Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, Jr. of the National Hispanic Christian Conference. Local governments said they will feel the pinch too, because a false count will lead to lower population figures and the results will be reductions in federal funds. "If you are not counted you just don't count so you receive nothing," said Jose "Joey" Torres. Torres is the mayor of Paterson, New Jersey which is heavily Hispanic. Torres said the 2000 census put his city's population just a few hundred people below a federal standard that could get his city more money. "It would be a travesty for anyone to follow that lead, I think there is a way of getting the message, I say there is time for immigration reform but this is the wrong methodology," said Torres. Rev. Rivera remained undeterred by the opposition to the proposed boycott. "They can fix this matter right away, just creating legislation that will bring path to legalization for 12 million undocumented immigrants," said Rev. Rivera. It is not known just how many undocumented immigrants will boycott the census, but Rev. Rivera has less than a year to spread his message. Census forms will be delivered next March and are due April 1. There is plenty of time for Rev. Rivera to persuade people not to take part, but his ultimate goal of immigration reform could prove much more elusive. Critics of the proposed boycott say the boycott would deny recession-starved cities and towns much-needed federal tax dollars.

Answer:
I think that the illegals should boycot the census - actually why they are at it - they should go right back to their own countries OR become legal citizens.... I am all for legal citizenship for people - I believe that the people living in our country are probably very good, hardworking people - but I am willing to be there are some very good, hardworking white collar criminals that are in jail for doing things that were against the law or...."illegal" because they are classified as criminals they loose their right to vote, carry firearms and many other privileges. However, someone living in our country against our laws gets benefits, scholarships, schooling and many other things....anyone see anything wrong with this picture We as Americans need to fix our economy....we need to take care of ourselves first and formost - to me, just me in my opinion, this does not include paying for and offering benifits to illegal immigrants who live in this country..... OK - I will take my verbal beating now.

Tell anyone that chooses to boycott the census that they can be shipped back to Mexico because if they're illegal, then they don't have any rights to speak out. The only right they have is a free trip back to their home country. If they don't like the way the country is run then they need to leave!!!!!!

They do get financial benefits. To deny them any thing has been called Unconstitutional: Most Of California's Prop. 187 Ruled Unconstitutional LOS ANGELES (AllPolitics, March 19) -- A U.S. District Court judge has declared most of California's Proposition 187 unconstitutional. Approved by voters in 1994, the proposition would have denied health care, education and welfare benefits to illegal immigrants. Almost immediately, Judge Mariana Pfaelzer granted its opponents' request for a restraining order, which prevented it from taking effect. In her final ruling, Pfaelzer rejected California's attempt to regulate immigration, which she said is the federal government's responsibility. Judge Pfaelzer's ruling strikes down portions of the initiative that would have required law enforcement, teachers, social service and health care workers to verify a person's immigration status. Under Proposition 187, they would have had to report illegals to authorities and to deny them social service, health care and education benefits. The American Civil Liberties Union's Southern California chapter was one of the five groups which sued to stop Proposition 187. In a statement, ACLU spokesman Mark Rosenbaum said Pfaelzer correctly denied California's attempt to regulate immigration. "[It is] not a matter for individual states to attempt to formulate their own rules and procedures," Rosenbaum said. "School teachers and doctors are not substitutes for INS agents." But California Gov. Pete Wilson, who supports Proposition 187, vowed to appeal, "so that the will of the people can be upheld." The appeal was dropped. Amnesty was granted in 1997 for all that were here already. The Federal Government failed to secure the boarders. Amnesty for illegal Immigrants Definition of Amnesty: Amnesty for illegal immigrants is defined as the government’s pardon for violating policies related to immigration or politics. The federal government forgives these individuals for using false documentation (examples include social security numbers, identification cards and driver’s license among other documents) to more easily get employment in the U.S. and to be able to remain in the country. Amnesties allow illegal immigrants or undocumented aliens to gain permanent residency in the United States Immigration Amnesties in the United States: The first United States amnesty was in 1986, and it allowed millions of illegal immigrants to receive a Green Card which could then lead to U.S. citizenship in later years. Before this first amnesty was granted, the United States government had only given amnesty on a case by case basis. In the cases where the government gave amnesty to illegal immigrants, it was only done on a small scale. For a period of over 200 years this was how the government granted amnesty, but in 1986 Congress introduced new immigration legislature. They passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act or IRCA which gave approximately 2.8 million illegal immigrants legal status in the United States. In addition, their immediate relatives or dependents which included about 143,000 individuals also qualified for the same status. The result of the amnesty introduced by Congress was that illegal immigration grew in significant numbers. When the Immigration Reform and Control Act was passed, it was only meant to be a “one time” amnesty but it actually turned out to be the beginning of many amnesties that would follow. To date there have been additional amnesties that have been granted to illegal immigrants which include: Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA), 1986: A blanket amnesty for some 2.7 million illegal aliens. Section 245(i) Amnesty, 1994: A temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 illegal aliens. Section 245(i) Extension Amnesty, 1997: An extension of the rolling amnesty created in 1994. Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) Amnesty, 1997: An amnesty for close to one million illegal aliens from Central America. Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty (HRIFA), 1998: An amnesty for 125,000 illegal aliens from Haiti. Late Amnesty, 2000: An amnesty for some illegal aliens who claim they should have been amnestied under the 1986 IRCA amnesty, an estimated 400,000 illegal aliens. LIFE Act Amnesty, 2000: A reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty, an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens The are currently several bills in the United States congress that could possibly create the 8th Amnesty. Each amnesty has been on a different scale, some granting amnesty to as little as 125,000 illegal immigrants while others have granted amnesty to almost 1 million illegal immigrants. Currently there are plans to introduce another amnesty to the approximate 12 million illegal immigrants that reside in the United States. Critics claim that immigration amnesties entice an even greater number of illegal migrants, since they hope for another amnesty which can grant them permanent resident status in the United States. Add to that the fact that California tax payers have for years paid more to the Federal Government then what they recieve and the mystery of why California is drowning in debt is not such a mystery. For every tax dollar paid by California only 78 cents is spent for Califonia by the Federal Govenment.

i think we should be doing MUCH more to stop illegal immigration. my grandparents, and even a few of my friends and their parents had to immigrate legally. what makes a person so special that they get to break the rules? as far as the whole accuracy regarding population and federal funding though, it may be necessary to count them. it's a tough situation.

I think it's a ridiculous proposal by conservative Latinos.

well, "new name" (aka anon in idaho), They have every right to. They aren't given any benefits or reform but people want them to participate? People don't want them to be Americans, but want them to do this only because it benefit the Citizens? I don't think this call to Boycott is even needed because the immigration enforcement has already scarred them from wanting to participate. So you can bet that the majority that don't, are the ones that this immigration enforcement scared away.......and who's to blame now? Hmmmm!

Illegal aliens really shouldn't be counted in the census. It just means that district gets more representation and more fed dollars. Which only encourages sanctuary cities which costs all of us more in taxes.
