How much would it cost to add diamonds to a ring?

  • I recently inheireted a 120 year old heirloom ring. Its white gold with a huge onyx stone as the setting. the onyx is cut with arches in the side which is unheard of today and make sthe ring very rare and priceless. However, i want to propose to my girlfriend with this ring but i want there to be some diamonds to reflect marriage... How much would it cost to add maybe 1 or 2 diamonds to each side of the onyx ? price of diamonds (they can be small and low queality, just something to add flare) and labor also would be nic eto know.... thanks in advance!

    No dont! OK here is what you do, you by an accent ring so that you put it on next to the onyx ring. If my man gave me a 120 year old ring, I would die. It would be great. even with out diamonds. So, I say buy an accent ring for her to wear next to it. so that she is wearing two rings. that way you dont ruin the ring by adding anything. just get an accent ring! tada! sounds wonderful! wish I could see a pic!!!

you dont need to add diamonds that would ruin the ring.... and there isnt a rule that an engagement ring has to be diamonds. its just a social thing. in fact traditionally engagement rings could be made of anything ooo the first poster gave me an idea. you could get the wedding ring to be diamonds... but like make the wedding ring match the onyx ring... like a bridal set, the wedding ring goes around the onyx ring.

you can buy loose diamonds from jewerlyexchange.com. It really depends on the quality of the diamond. some can be 200 some can be 2000. Try going to/ or calling your local jeweler to see how much it would be to add diamonds. It is hard to estimate price without seeing the ring like a professional could. The ring sounds beautiful! It may be better to just have a diamond accent ring to wear next to it.

I was actually shopping for wedding bands today and overheard another saleswoman talking about doing such a thing! She said to add diamonds the labor would be like $120 for each diamond if it was done in the USA, of course it would be much cheaper to send it out of the country. The cost of the diamonds depends on the size. I would go to your local jeweler and ask about loose diamonds. It can be tricky to match diamonds for sidestones. You can look on websites too, but be sure they are the same size and shape and color and clarity! You should be able to find two 1/4 carat diamonds for about $1400-$1500, maybe less depending on quality.
