Where do they buy their stock?

How much does it cost to make your own wedding invitations? where can i buy card stock in bulk?

  • I will be sending out about 250 invitations. my sister and i plan on making them. ive never bought card stock. how much do i need to get i know we will have to buy- envelopes stamps ivory card stock (for the actual card) brown card stock (cover of card) then we plan to decorate the front. fall theme. my sister has a tree stamp we are going to use and a criket so we can cut tiny leaves out and glue them on the tree. (i know. very labor intensive) Also do i have to send reply cards? can i just tell them to rsvp on the wedding website or is that tacky?

  • Answer:

My husband and i made ours, and none of our guests knew it. We bought the blank invitations at Party Stuff (Michael's Craft store has them too) and printed them at home with a script on Microsoft Word. The kit came with envelopes and reply cards, and cost a fraction of what getting them made professionally would have cost.

You can get a kit from Staples or Michael's. The kits have everything you need. They are much cheaper than buying them custom-made from a printer. Another option is to get them printed online. You can design them yourself on sites like 123print.com or Vista.com. This is where we got ours. 100 invitations, envelopes, RSVP cards and their envelopes were less than $100 including shipping.

They are not cost effective and will require a ton of time and energy. It won't be worth it. Yes you absolutely have to have reply cards for the convenience of your guests.

Using cardstock is way too much trouble. They sell kits with the invitations already cut and designed, and you just run them through your printer at home. You should check at Target and Michael's and see if they have a design with leaves on it in the color you want, or look online and order them that way. The kits come with response cards and envelopes, so you might as well use them. Asking for people to rsvp on a website is trouble, because you may lose their emails as they come in, or they may blow it off. If you send them a card with a stamped envelope, 99% of guests know they have to check off their meal choice and send it back asap. I had to chase down about 10 guests who didn't respond by the deadline for my wedding but most of them came back quickly.

If you are dead set on making your own with the stamping/Cricut/etc., as opposed to getting a pre-packaged kit - you can find packs of ivory cardstock at Staples. I believe the 250 count package was about $14 - I'm going to assume that the brown cardstock is for the ebellishements cut with the Cricut - I didn't notice any brown CD at Staples. You could look at Michael's or Joann's or even Walmart to see if they have whole packages of just brown paper - I know Michael's has combo packs - different shades all in one pack - that might have enough brown for you. You just don't want to have to buy it by the piece. That will take you to the poorhouse. You might have to order on line to get enough, if you really need a lot.
