Honeymoon on a budget-have a few questions-need some opinions.....?
-
It won't be for 1 1/2 years, but I'm starting to look around now just to get an idea where we'll go. We don't have much money to spend, but my dream honeymoon would be to Belize. It's so beautiful, there's so much there, and a treehouse (witth plumbing and electricity) sounds like a dream to me. I'm someone who wants to travel around the world, but has never even been on a plane. What better way to start our life together than my first plane trip to a rainforest/the Caribean-I know, corny, but I love the idea of it. They have everything there that I would consider to be included in the perfect honeymoon, and I want to go there soooo bad. But we're on a budget, and I'm afraid prices are a little high for us. We're having a small wedding-it's what we want, not settling-and my parents paid for at least $6,000 of my sister's weddiing (mainly the photographer), and I'm pretty sure will do the same for our wedding. So, first option, we can take that and have a great honeymoon (unless I'm totally ignorant about vacationing and $6,000 is not even enough to go to Belize for somewhere like 4 nights and 5 days, lol). Second option, we can put it towards the small wedding, which will cover a LOT of the expenses, and not go to Belize for our honeymoon, instead picking somewhere less expensive and less exotic. I WANT to go to Belize for our honeymoon, and of course my fiance and I still have to discuss it, but he seems to be leaving most of it up to me. I was just wondering what you would do. For a little background, I have a four year old daughter, am 4 1/2 months pregnant with his child, we'll be moving in together around September, he has a good job, but I haven't even finished college yet (I'm 27 but took some time off for some stupid reason), and I'm in the middle of writing my first book, and we really are on a tight budget. Thankfully we would want a small wedding regardless of the money we could spend, so it'll be great for us, and we're getting married at my parents house (they have nice property). And we live in northern New Jersey if it matters. What should we do?! I think I've already figured it out, and I'm sure my fiance will agree with my reasoning once we've really discussed it, but I'm still curious about your opinions. Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give:)

Answer:
I know one couple who went to Belize but I don't know anything about their trip. You're already ahead of the game since you already know your budget, so ask your friends if they know a good travel agent and go sit down with someone who can tell you if your budget is realistic or not.

I would personally spend it on the wedding. The honeymoon in Belize could be a trip you did for your 5 or 10 year anniversary because then it puts the wedding as an amount of debt that you start out with. Take the money from your parents and pay for your wedding that way, then plan an inexpensive weekend getaway for you and your HTB somewhere close, like a winery or just go up to NYC for a good time. :)
Belize is a great destination for a honeymoon. It is a little more expensive than other countries in the region, but the advantage is that English is the official language of Belize, making it very easy to get by there. Hotels can range from $4 per night to several thousand depending on how nice the hotel is. You should be able to stay and eat very well on about $150 per person per day. Airfare can be expensive depending on where you are coming from. If you like the adventure style honeymoon, I suggest looking at Costa Rica. They have the treehouses and little boutique surf hotels. It is a little cheaper than Belize. Where ever you go, check out vrbo.com. If you don't need all the hotel amenities, you can rent a house or condo in many Central American Countries starting at $500 per week. For $1500 per week you could get something on the beach. One other thing to consider is to have a destination wedding in the same country as the honeymoon. That way you can save money on travel and give your guests an amazing time. If you want the destination to be a little more affordable for your guests, check out Sayulita, Mexico. Full of American expats, it is another place easy for guests to get around. You can rent a 5 bedroom house there for $1000 per week to put up your guests in. If you need a destination wedding photographer, check me out: http://www.timothyfaust.com
it depends what is most important to you. you have limited funds. should they go toward the wedding or toward the honeymoon? you seem to really love the idea of a honeymoon in belize. check out prices. see if you can find a good deal. then save up between now and then and maybe have a smaller wedding. or just have the wedding and save the reception for a date in the future. your family will understand. another thing to consider is how far along you will be during the honeymoon. you are not supposed to fly in your 3rd trimester.
Come to Boracay, Philippines. Very romantic but cheap. Here are some photos you can check: http://boracayreviews.com/photos/
