Making an appointment to see a psychiatrist?

It depends on your insurance. Some insurance companies won't cover visits to a specialist if you haven't been referred by your primary care physician. Others don't care, as long as the psychiatrist you see is a preferred provider. I would first contact your insurance company and find out what their policy is on patient self-referrals. If they will cover self-referred visits, then you can call up a psychiatrist's office in your area directly without needing your primary care doctor to refer you. You will want to make sure they are a preferred provider for your insurance company, though, otherwise the insurance will not cover very much of the visit, which can run up in the hundreds of dollars without coverage. If you can't self-refer, then you need to make an appointment with your primary care physician and tell them that you want to be referred to a psychiatrist. Their office will make the referral, and you should get a call from the psychiatrist's office in a few days to schedule an appointment. Hope that helps!

You should probably start with a psychologist to see if you need to be referred to a psychiatrist. Plus psychologist are a lot cheaper. Other than that you could just make an appointment on your own!

Check your insurance first. See if they have a list of Psychiatrist's available. I would call one of them. Call your Physician to see who they refer you to see.
