How to get over first time job fears?

  • This Friday I will be working at a grocery store for the first time sitting in front of a cash register. I am so scared! I am in high school!

    Keep in mind it's your FIRST day of your FIRST job. Your employers know that too. You will get training and they encourage you to ask for help (I was actually fired from a job because I tried to do things on my own instead of asking for help when I was unsure) Most customers will be very understanding that you are going slow or make a mistake or two since you are new. Most places have some sort of pin that says "Im in training" so people know to be patient. Focus more of the feeling of fear opposed to why you are afraid. think of how ALIVE your fear makes you feel! Grocery stores are a great place to have your first job. You learn lots of skills that will come in handy in other types of jobs. Good luck on your first shift!

Just relax. Everyone knows you're new, so they EXPECT you to make mistakes. Also, since it is your first day, they won't have you working anything difficult. They will probably just show you around and show you the basics like where you clock in, where to park, what to wear, etc. Good luck!

My first job was as a cashier, too, and I was also scared. Just don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. They'll have someone train you the first two or so days, and teach you everything you should know, so that should help ease your nervousness and get to know the staff better. Just watch the person carefully, and ask them everything you need to ask. Take notes and take them home to study! I did it! Being nervous is understandable. So was I, but after a week, there was no problem with it.
