In what ways can a paralegal advance their career?

My roomate does dope etc and has a degree...am sure his partying ways means he wont get his career choice...?

  • He's sweet and social, I am a career driven and a few years older. I find it very depressing he works after hours while I am trying to focus on job opportunties. He goes out up to 4 times a week coming in at eg 4am and for a 28yo I am sure he is living more like a uni student. All his friends do dope. Is this part of the lifestyle? Its depressing knowing he sleeps till midday as its not normal. He is a nice guy but it puts me under social pressure as I dont have many people in my life..they are all like me..at the point you realise its important to break through into your career so no time, even though you end up isolated. Its like both extremes. As someone who has done recruitment, I even gave him career tips. I am sure the time he spends in bed, is the time his competitors have already got the jobs he dreams about. He only fiinished his degree and am sure he is on the path to partying away the rest of his life. How do i stop him effecting me as its very depressing to reaslise I am 'home alone' but no way am I going out till 4am and is 28 to old for this? He has a psychology degree and works in a call cente after hours but seems very naive and unware of what would be expected of him. It counteracts that I have great interviews and while I partied earlier in life am very aware now that is now or never. Does dope give you a sense of living forever V on borrowed time? When he has a day off ie monday they all turn up, so they dont have normal lifestyles I think. Is that what happens if you do drugs ie everything is a party? He probably thinks I am very serious but the reality is I already partied and worked very hard for the opportunities I am now getting. If he is in this 'mode' am i right in saying the time he is spending sleeping off dope / alcohol is sapping his motivation..and mine indirectly? he watches dvd's until eg 3am and am sure he is just living for now. To his credit he has a girilfriend and loyal friends but am sure the dope dicatates most of it. Can someone fill me in as I dont think he is focused on career..or he would get the interviews I do. But it means its depressing for us both, I dont have enough fun by his standards. Any people who have done this?

    Your friend will either change or end up in a early grave. You have to just do what is right for you at this point in your life. Yes, it can be depressing to see people piss away their lives, I see people do it daily. You have to just look forward and keep movin' along.

I think that you should stop focusing so much on him and maybe focus on what you want. If this bothers you so much, why not move? Or,..if it is your house,..ask him to leave? 28 is a little old to be acting this way. But...I know many even at my own age who still party like their 21. (or 18 really) If it is depressing to you, maybe you should look for other options. All I am saying is,...it's a lot easier to change your own situation,..than it is to change someone else.
