Does a silencer give any effect to a two-stroke engine? (Yamaha TZR 50)?

• I have a Yamaha TZR 50 from 2009 and I just ordered a Yasuni exhaust pipe. I talked to my friend, who also has a TZR, but with a Leo Vince V6 exhaust pipe, and I really want his silencer on my Yasuni, and he wants mine. If we would trade them would the pipes work with the same effect as usual? or would they lose effect and not work properly? If I would change back to the original silencer, would I lose effect? The main question is: Do silencers have any effect on the power of a 2-stroke bike?

  Very likely yes. Any change will likely alter the point at which the presure wave hits it's major obstruction and thus bounces back towards the exhaust porting. It's this tuning that CAN draw optimum amounts of intake air into the intake port by actually lowering the presure in your combustion chamber. Some recent designs, however, have variable porting (I don't think yours is one of these) that would change the port configuration and wave forms further upstream than the ehaust silencer proper. However, even on these later designs altering the exhaust on a two stroke can dramatically alter the fuel economy and EPA numbers by drawing too much fuel through and out without burning at all, if nothing else. If so, you might notice a power increase; but the EPA will not be happy.
