Because I haven't had a bike for 20 years, I don't want to spend too much either. What size should I focus on

Answer:
I was going to ask which country your from.. but I caught sight of the US Flag. So that changes things a bit.. I;m in the UK. I good bike.. thats an all rounder, that would getyou back into biking.. is something like a yamaha xj600 diversion.. they may be called the xj600 seca over there. A good place to get some info from actually speaking to guys is the American Legion riders club. The Uk equiv is the Royal BRitish Legion Riders branch... plenty of people with lots of different bikes. So you could speak to them, and maybe some would let you sit on theri bike. Thats something else to do, go to a 2nd hand bike shop, and ask to sit on some bikes.... look at how far your feet are when they are on the floor.. where your knees are when you put your feet on the pegs. See if you can get a test ride. Not sure of how it works in the states.. I was over there a number of years ago.. and a guy in a bike shop offered to let me borrow a bike to see more of the city.. but I said no... as dident have my uk licence with me and wasent sure about insurance etc. Anyway, SV650 is a good allrounder as well.. migt be a little small for you.. I'm 280lbs and ride a yamaha xjs900 diversion. Big shaft drive bike. Quick, sturdy. You can get plenty of mods for it still as well as parts. plenty of divi owner forums on the net, with guys to help you out if you get stuck. http://www.bikersoracle.com/yamahadiversion/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3 I got my 900 for £800 - thats about $1200 roughly... the600 secas I;ve seen on ebay.. are about $750.. but as i have no idea where in the US you are.. I couldent say if one is near to you. The engines on the 900divi's are bomb proof.. they are a seriously long distance tourer... stable 2 up.. so you and your wife/partner/boyfriend/girlfriend (covering all sso as not to offend) would be fine. I built a towbar for mine, and a dog trailer so my malamute dog and I can go camping. You can buy the towing hitch etc easily in the state for it, so theres that option. GIVI stil make luggage racks for them.. but more will more than likly already have them on. 1 good upgrade I;d do straight away, is swap the front brake calipers for those blue spot type from the yamaha fazer/r6, makes braking a lot nicer and faster. Its not odd to see a 900 divi with 150,000 miles on the clock.. the most I ever heard about was over 300,000 miles.. so the guy had to have been doing some serious miles per year to hit that. hope some of that helps.

The 650cc size is the most versatile. It is small enough that it is enjoyable around town. It is large enough that it is still nice to ride long distance. I would recomend the Yamaha 650cc v-star with the Suzuki Boulivard s40 second choice. Since you have not ridden in 20 years the cruiser style would be best. They are the easiest to control and offer the lowest insurance rates if you get full coverage. The 650 v-star is a twin cylinder with shaft drive. But, it is large enough that you can take a pasenger that is about your size. The suzuki boulivard may not be a large enough bike for a similar sized passenger. You may also want to look at the 750's. Honda has a nice 750cc Shadow that is shaft drive and similar in style and comfort to the 650 v-star. Although a 750 is not as enjoyable in stop and go traffic it is not yet too big. Suzuki also has a few models of 805cc cruisers. That would also be acceptable for what you want. But, that is a large as I would recomend. Machines today have more power than machines of the past. A 650cc is large enough that you can easily break any speed limit, even with a passenger. So, not really necesary to get any larger.

been off bikes for 20 years.. what sort of bike did you ride then??? if your last bike was something like the FJ1200 Yam then a 650cc bike would be very comparable... SV 650 suzuki....acceleration about the same as the FJ.. weighs a lot less... top speed a bit slower..
