How is a Motorcycle Jacket made?

Motorcycle armor for women?

  • I'm just learning to ride, so I'm shopping around for my first riding gear. I'm noticing something I really do not like - mens' jackets and other gear are WAY more protective than the stuff made for women! I can not find a ladies jacket that offers nearly as much protection as the mens jackets. Not to mention gloves and armored pants. I'm 5'5" and 128lbs, curvy, so I really do need the cut of the ladies stuff. (And not just for looks - when your leathers fit properly you are better protected.) What is the problem? How come nothing appropriate is made for female riders? Do they think girls are just passengers? Even so, the passenger needs the same protection as the driver because in a crash the passenger will go flying just as far. So does anyone out there know where I can find the best protection in female motorcycle outfitting? I want all the same impact areas, plates, protection, etc, that can be found in a mens outfit, just made to fit me properly. There's got to be some company that makes an appropriate product - maybe I just have not found it yet, so please help, and thank you very much!

You have very valid points and concerns, but, if the manufacturers don't have a market, they don't make the product. Women riders are a very small minority demographically speaking. Contact the manufacturers directly and ask what they have as that will be where you'll get you best answers, then ask for distributors in your area.

Try motorcyclesuperstore.com, newenough.com, firstgear.com, etc. There are tons of women's motorcycle clothes out there. I personally like the Rev'it Women's Air jacket.

I'm partial to Joe Rocket and have noticed that they have a female version of just about every jacket or pant. Icon seems to be more fashion conscious but as you noticed have less armor. My guess would be that its harder to make something flattering and still be fully armoured (my hips are too big! or does my butt look to big with all this padding?). Alpinestar also makes what appear to be flattering gear. Usually the europeans have more gear available than America since they have more riders of either sex. Motorcycles and scooters are more common for everyday use there. A lot of european gear is using the latest reactive armor which is soft, thin and pliable until a sharp impact is applied at which point it becomes rock hard and impermeable. Another writer mentioned going to the manufacturers, not a bad idea.
