Guys, thanks for posting reasonable answers to this n00b before I got a chance to rip him. I am just getting so sick of these guys thinking they can just hop on a "crotch rocket" (groan) and turn into boy racer without learning the fundamentals. Already in my area, 3 of these guys have taken their shiny new R6's and ZX-6rs and piled into guard rails and telephone poles, and I'm getting sick of seeing the piles of flowers and crosses at the spot they lost their lives. Now, when I do get my bike out for the season, I get looked at like I'm one of them, until I remove my full-face helmet and they see the gray hair and receding hairline. I have spent decades earning the credentials to ride my liter bike, and these guys think they can hop out of their civics and onto a street-legal race bike and ride like an idiot. Sorry for the rant. It just seems that for every kid we discourage from starting on a supersport bike, 3 more pop up to replace him. It's like a game of whack-a-mole that we have no chance of winning. By the way, I used to work at a Kawasaki dealer and I had to wear a saleman's hat from time to time, especially on weekends. One of the reasons I don't work there any more was I refused to sell a ZX-10r to a 19-year-old kid on leave from Iraq, and tried to at least get him down to a Ninja 650r. I got ripped by my boss, and the regular salespeople sold him the bike on Monday, he proceeded to wreck it pretty badly the following weekend, (broken left arm and left leg) and had to be discharged from the military due to his injuries. So, it really is personal for me.

Only newbies and non-riders use the term "crotch rocket". None of the 600cc-and-up 4-cylinder sport-bikes is suitable for an inexperienced rider, so NONE of them would be the "best" for you. Start small, learn to ride, then move up in terms of bike capabilities.

They all make great street legal racing bikes. But street legal racing bikes are not great street bikes and they are definitly not for beginners or even a very high percentage of experienced riders.

I would get about a 600cc bike. Anything less will bore you in less than a year. Anything more will take time for a beginner. As for what is the best? Depends on the rider. Asking a general question like that tells me you havent dont your homework. Get out and sit on EVERYTHING including sport touring bikes or maybe even some cruisers. make a top 5 or even a top 3 list then do your research on them. The bike will pick you my friend. You will know it when you find it.

I've been a huge yamaha fan. I've had a 2004 YZ250, 2005 ttr230 (dirtbikes), and a 2007 R1. I loved the R1 so much. The newer R1's feel a bit awkward for me when I sit on em, but the 2007 felt perfect. It was fast as **** too.
