There are many choices when it comes to a first bike. A V-twin engine in the 500-750cc range is a safe bet. The most import factor is to find a bike you're comfortable with. Go to a dealer and sit on a few bikes to find one that fits you. The following bikes are on my short list of good first bikes: Honda Shadow Kawasaki Ninja 500R, Vulcan 500 Ltd Suzuki SV650, GS500E Yamaha V-Star Class, V-Star Custom The Shadow, Vulcan, and V-Star bikes are cruisers, while the Ninja, SV, and GS are sportbikes. It's a matter of personal preference. If you find one you like, but it's too tall, you can have a motorcycle mechanic lower it for you. My wife and I own a Ninja 500R and a SV650; I'm 5' 6" and I'm barely tall enough for them. Controllable power and light weight are two of the most important things in a first bike. A mid-range V-twin engine will give you a good mix of power and control. Sportbikes will be easier to steer, as they have less trail than cruisers, but you might find a cruising position more comfortable, and cruisers tend to have lower seats. Whatever you do, don't get a 4-cylinder bike for your first one. There's a huge difference between a 600cc V-twin and a 600cc inline four - the fours tend to be race-oriented bikes.

i just got my very first bike. it is an 09 ninja 250r. i loved it at first but then it got to where i had no power. i would suggest nothing lower than a 600cc bike. ninja zx6 - zx1 are good first bikes but watch it because they are extremely fast and easy to get hurt on very easy. or if you know some people who have them let them show you how to ride then get used to it and then go and find the bike you want. i almost got killed on my 250cc cause it was my first day and i layed it over. just one word of advice dont get cocky or even think your good on a bike for safe measures. but try riding some different cc bikes. my personal favorite is the gsxr 750. look into it.
