How to ask for money when someone is using your photo for advertising ?

  • Hi, I just took a nice photo and then i just asked a hotel if they are interested to use my photo (since the photo that i took is related with this hotel) for advertising. One of the marketing crew just answered me that they will be happy if they use my photo either on their website or for any other advertising and they just asked me to fill in an application form so i will give them my right to use my photo for advertising. The thing is that they didn't tell me if they are ready to give me any money or any other things for my photo. Can someone help me and tell me how should i ask them about this without loosing their interest in my photo ?? Maybe can you give me some ideas what should i write to them to ask them if they are ready to give me any money or any gifts for my photo ? Thanks a lot.

    You should've made it clear that you wanted to SELL the photo's rights to them. I say that you should let it go, this time, but in future, make it CLEAR that you want money in exchange for the photograph.

Get back to them and say: I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear but I would like to sell you the right to use this photo. Then the negotiation starts. If they lose interest it won't be over your presentation. It will be over the price or the fact that you want to sell it. It's very hard to sell a photo to someone. If I take an outstanding photo of your kid making a diving stop of a soccer ball in front of the goal you'll have absolute interest in owning it if I am willing to give it to you. As the price goes up your interest goes down. Never be afraid to ask for money. Everyone knows that everyone needs money.

Call them and ask. If they have ever worked with a photographer before they know a fee is standard, your question won't surprise them. If they aren't willing to pay you sell your photo elsewhere. You aren't helping your reputation if you give things away for free. But if you have already sent them the signed papers it's too late.

Just sent back your quote for the picture, but dont give it away, it will hurt you and most off all when you give photos away or sell them for cheap it hurts all other photographers, everyone needs to charge an arm and a leg!
