How Do I Crop A Photo Free Handed In GIMP?

Why does Corel Paint Shop Pro X crop function also shrink photo to less than 1/4 original size?

  • For some reason, when I crop the edges off a photo in Corel Paint Shop Pro X, a 2MB photo is transformed into a 500KB photo (approximately). I also just tried it in a trial version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5 - Corel Photo-Paint X5, and the same thing happened. I've used Corel for a few years and have never noticed this problem before. Why is it that when I trim less than 2% off the edges of the print, the newly cropped photo is over 75% smaller than the original? Cindy

  • Answer:

After you click on the Crop Tool, check the Options bar and make sure nothing there might decrease the size - like resolution. Also, when saving your photos, use File>Export>JPG Optimizer. It lets you set the compression and retains the quality of your photos.

Other answers

The issue comes about due to the default image quality settings. Odds are that your camera is set to "super-fine" or similar and Paint Shop Pro's default is set for web export which would produce a much harsher image. If you use the "save as" function for your altered images and set the .jpg quality very high, you'll not see any significant decrease in file size over the percentage you've cropped.
