What does it take to start a photography business?

Photography Business Help!?!?

  • Hi I'm graduating next year and I want to start my own photography business. I want to specialize in children/infants and family photos and maybe take maternity photos. But the thing is I don't know where to start. Some people know about me but not many. I'm going to be making some flyers soon and hopefully that will help. So what steps do I need to take to start my own photography business? Thanks :)

    1) invest in some decent equipment - "it isn't the equipment that takes the shot, but the talent behind it", BUT you have to impress your clients... you might take excellent shots with a point and shoot, but they want to know you are going to use something more professional... 2) do business classes, marketing, ect... 3) build a portfolio... use your first few clients as a commodity... 4) build a website - a professional looking one... 5) advertise... you can do that on facebook, twitter, leaflet drops, advertising in local newspapers, etc..

You start by getting an internship under a professional photographer to learn the business side. Taking the photos is the easy part compared to the business side.

Would you hire a photographer based on a flyer? I wouldn't. You need to advertise. Try Facebook, local news papers, and placing brochures in local baby and toy stores. Get some good prints and offer to put them up in some OBGYN's offices along with your cards.
