Why do agencies lose clients, what are the reasons?

Is this a way for a freelance model to promote himself?

  • I am needing money to pay for college, and am thinking that there is significant money to be made in freelance print ad modeling (Like $50.00 per hour money). I have made composite cards (ZED CARDS) and am thinking of skipping the agent and dealing directly with clients, working on a business degree, and have basic business knowledge, so I wont lose track of clients bills and actually lose money or anything. I was wondering if mailing composite cards to local Marketing Agencies, Photographers, Stores, Car Dealerships, Photographers. Newspapers, Magazines, Night Clubs. Bars, Restaurants, Tourist Centers and such would actually get me some business. Would they even open the envelope when they recieve the comp cards, would they file the comp cards, throw them out, call me or what would they do. I dont want or need an agent to take like a 20% commission of MY MONEY thet I desperately need in order to PAY FOR COLLEGE. Am I wasting my stamps, I look like some of the agency models, and can work all the angles, and know all the poses, and I was thinking of offering a rate 10% LOWER THAN AN GAGENCY QUOTES THE CLIENT, WILL I GET ANY BUSINESS?

  • Answer:

Well, most of the places you listed..."car dealerships, restaurants, newspapers, etcetera"...hire a photographer for their images, and normally the photographer gets the models. The other thing to consider is that most people/places prefer female models, unless it is for something targeted EXCLUSIVELY to females. You could put a profile out on onemodelplace.com to see how much interest/business you can get from local photographers and also submit your Sed cards (named after Sebastian Sed) to local modeling agencies...sorry to say this, but the agencies have the most contacts Look at it this way, you're wanting $50/hour and a reputable agency will bill you out at $100 to$125+/hour. If they keep 20%, that is still $80 to $100/hour you get. One last thing about being a male model...you will never earn what a female model earns, and there is less demand for a male advertising model than there is for male porn actors.

Go to an agent period. You may get the odd job doing what you are doing but it is nothing compared to what an agency will get you. You're in college so this should be easy: Would you rather have 80% of $1,000 or 100% of $50? I have never booked a model in the way you are describing. We don't have time to look for models one by one. We call a model agency and they send us a bunch of models.

put your details on modelmayhem... you might get more interest than advertising yourself on here...

Forlorn Hope

Unless a company is using their own employees or family members as models, they will almost always book through an agency. The reason you are giving an agent 20% is because they not only will get you more work than you'll get on your own, they will also get higher day rates for you.

If you're looking to make money modeling don't waste your time on Model Mayhem. Very few models make any money on there unless they are willing to do nudes. Find yourself a reputable agency to work through.
