What is "contrast" in photography?

'Contrast' theme for my photography AS work, Please could anyone give me ideas for my AS photography project?

  • I am about to start AS photography, my teacher has given me summer work to do. The theme is 'Contrast'. You can focus on the broad theme or look more closely at contrast in textures, contrast between dark and light tones, contrast in colours ect... Or, Look at the theme in a more imaginative way, looking at the contrast between different people, different ways of life, ancient vs modern. Please help, getting really stressed!!

    Have you considered doing portraits (candid or not) on the street of either race differences or class differences? i.e. a homeless person and a suit? This is a ridiculously broad topic, if you don't have any creative ideas at all about it you may not want to be a photographer... Also, ew, don't do HDR.

Something came to mind straight away. It is an idea that I once had but never took further. It does involve people of different ethnic origins. The idea was to have a background that was half black and half white (divided vertically) with darker skinned people in front of the white background and lighter skinned people in front of the black background. It is a great idea for ethics as the 'darks' need the 'lights' and the 'lights' need the 'darks' in order to show up: they compliment each other. Sorry for just using 'darks' and 'lights' but the PC terminology keeps changing and I am too afraid to write one or the other because I do not know which is correct these days! Amazing how much damage a word can do, isn't it?

Black and white photos often show up with strong contrast, especially if you tweak the contrast in photoshop or similar. Photos of architecture can look good with heaps of contrast. Thinking more about the subjects, you'll often find contrast in cities with new buildings adjacent to old buildings, or built-up areas bordering open parkland.

You've got quite a few ideas in the brief already - just go out & shoot something! If you are struggling with what is quite an easy assignment, then maybe AS Photography is not for you?
