Photographers with photos on Flickr, how would I contact you to ask permission to use your photo?
-
I'm practicing oil painting at home. I'm not in a class or anything. I'm not affiliated with any group. I'm looking for photos that I can use to recreate in oil paint. It is possible that if I get really good I might be able to sell my paintings. So I'm trying to get permission to use photos on Flickr. It's easier for me to paint from photos at this time, but even though it's just practice for now I COULD get good and eventually sell my work...which would be YOUR work with your permission. I'd be happy to credit you, to add your name to the finished work, if I sell. But I doubt I'll get more than thirty bucks for any paintings at first, so I can't offer any money at this time. How can I contact photographers to find out if they would be willing to give permission? Will they get upset if I ask? (I've already been insulted on Y/A today over this issue, accused of trying to steal work when I was only asking IF I needed permission to use Flickr. I was threatened with a law suit- and all I did was ask a question...from the comfort of my living room, lol! I'm sitting her in my living room typing questions and somebody already wants to sue me. Wow, right?) Should I even bother with Flicker, or will most photographers be that possessive about their work? (Don't wanna get hit with another phantom lawsuit, you know?) :) I'm NOT trying to steal any person's work. I'm just asking. Thanks. And if you are one of the few really polite people in this world then triple thanks to you, lol. :) PS I can offer permission to use my writing in exchange for permission to use your photo. I don't mind, long as I am credited. It's all I have to trade, since I can't pay. Of course, as a writer I'd be flattered for someone to want to use my work. I'd think (or hope) a photographer would also be flattered?) :) How should I approach a photographer on Flicker to ask, if at all? Thanks. (Triple Thanks?) :)

Answer:
Sign up for a flickr account and then you can contact them through the site. Credit??? does that pay the mortgage. NO. Offer to pay as you should be doing. You may be flattered for someone to want to use your work, but if it was being ripped off on a regular basis as photographers work is then you would not be so flattered and would expect people to follow the law and ask for permission and then pay what the photographer asks or not use the work at all.

Please pardon us photographers. The advent of the digital age has seen us ripped off royally and we do tend to get miffed when our income is at stake. That said, you sound quite thoughtful and do not deserve such a harsh response. If you are on a photographer's Flickr image you will see their icon to the upper left. Hover over that and you will see a blue area with a down arrow, click on that and you will see "send Flickr mail" and you can send them your request. Best of luck!

Easiest is to sign up for a free flickr account. Upload a few pics of paintings you've done. When you have a flickr account it's easy to send another user a message. Personally I don't mind requests at all as long as they're polite (it's all the teen girls stealing my work for tumblr that I have problems with). I've had requests for a special envelope for stamp collectors, granted permission on condition they'd send me one. I've had requests for paintings. Painting requests I grant permission on two conditions. 1. I want a picture. 2. if it sells well I want a small cut of the profits.

You've already e-mailed me a nasty message but I'll respond to this anyway: How would you feel if you were contacted by someone interested in using your writings for them to make money from but never see a dime of that? You may be okay now with not getting paid but let's say you move into the professional arena of writing. Now, same scenario. You have worked hard at your career and established yourself as a credible writer and someone wants your work for free so they can profit from it. Would you change your perspective? Having been in the professional writing industry off and on for about a decade, I can tell you right now that no one gets my work and profits from it without me being paid for my share. The same applies to photography. If you are a blogger, student, friend or fellow photographer I'd be open to sharing my photos for free so long as you were not profiting from them. Once you begin profiting from my creations, that's when I expect to receive my share of the pot. It's only fair and ethically, it's the right thing to do. There may be other photographers out there willing to share their photos without receiving anything other than credit but every respectable photographer I know will expect payment of some sort even if it is small. You can ask politely and explain your intentions but I'd wager my last nickel that every photographer you ask will require some kind of payment if you intend to profit from their work. By the way, it has nothing to do with being possessive over their work. As a writer you should be more concerned with who is interested in using your work and for what purposes. For some photographers on this site their images are their livelihood and they are well within their rights to tell you they'd sue if you took one of their photos from Flickr and profited from it. I'm not even a pro and I'd sue for profiting from my work without permission. It's not possessive, it's protecting something I've put a lot of time, energy, and knowledge into to create that photo no matter how mundane or lame (for some photos). Lastly, no one was insulting you. People were just telling you how it is. Your wording came off like you intended to steal from and profit from photographers under the assumption that everything on Flickr was public domain because of a lack of prices. That may not have been your intent but that's how it was perceived by many on this site, myself included.

As flicker is part of yahoo it is linked to their yahoo account. Try sending them an email to their yahoo email using their screen name @ yahoo Most people using yahoo have an email account linked so give it a try. What kind of photos are you looking for, there are many people in here that have a hobby of photography like myself with lots of pictures that are not uploaded into flicker. I'm sure some would not mind sharing them with you.

I personally wouldn't allow it with my images, but if you wanted to contact flickr photographers in general, when you look at an image, the photographer's name is to the upper right. Click on their name, and then you will see an email option in the menu. Just send them a message explaining what you want to do.

Simply make a Flickr account easily with your Yahoo! account, find the person, and message them something like this : "I was wondering if I could use one of your photos, (link or name here) for one of my oil paintings, so I can sell it. I will change the painting a bit, obviously, and will give your credit." Also, maybe shortening this question, and making it torwards the person you are messaging on Flickr. You could use my photography, if you like, as long as you don't make a fortune on it, or become famous.. Most of my photography is wildlife and nature photography, but I have some landscapes and pets. Here are my photos : http://www.flickr.com/photos/66188877@N03/sets/ Message me either here, on Flickr, or at [email protected] saying which photo you will use. I'm also curious about your painting, so email me a photo!
