What do you do when you have artist block?

If you're an artist & have ever had a creative "block",how long b4 you overcame this? What are some tips?

  • I like to paint ...... and draw.--Have a tremendous amount of ideas-my art work tends to be on the "poetic side", so I've been told. And have had a block for many yrs. now. It's somehow painful, though also painful [oddly enough] if/when I do actually create something. Hmmmmm .... any advice, insight on this? thx

  • Answer:

Dude, I hate spam answers. Do you know what I hate more? Creative blocks. What you hear from professional artists (visual and literature, and beyond!) is that the only surefire and character-building way to overcome a block is to keep going. So, even if you feel like dying as you express yourself without that inspirational spark, you have to fight through it. Draw/paint a still life every day. Just for 10 minutes if that's all you have time for. It'll come back, I promise you. ;] It took me months to get out of mine. But once I started doing this, it began to come back. Also, it's always helpful to figure out why you create art. Sounds weird, but digging into yourself can really help with inspiration, you know? At first I did art because I was good at it, and liked the attention I got. This did not go far. I had to find reasons to do art for ME and only ME. If you already know why, then you are ahead of the game! I wish you luck!
