How can I become a full-time artist?

Do you think I can become a Manga artist, eventhough i'm not a Japanese?

  • My passion is to become a manga artist. And I really loved to draw animes and making a short comic strip. I was really really inspired by animes and manga books that created by many japanese artists in Japan. But do you guys think that I can become a manga artist? And: If I'm a non-japanese manga artist, do you think the japanese people would welcoming a non-japanese artist like me to published 'my' book there? I hope you guys understand what i mean, and I just need to know what you guys think. Surely some of you have the same passion as I do.

I think nationality should never be a barrier, and if it is, why not be the first to break it! One start you could do is to create a deviantArt profile, where you can upload your work and get feedback on it! You also could see other people's work, and maybe help you get more ideas. This could be a good start to help get a feel for where you need to improve. There are American "manga" novels, which is also another option you could pursue. Like I said, nationality shouldn't be a barrier. So break it!

I'd say that if you have the talent, they won't mind what nationality you are. I've never read her comics but there is a Korean artist who's comics are being translated into Japanese and are published here. But to tell the truth, it's REALLY HARD to make a living as a pro manga artist in Japan. I used to be a otaku myself when I was a teen and I've seen tons of talented Japanese (non-pro) manga artists who weren't able to make it. That is why there are millions of Doujinshi (comics created by non-pro manga artists) in Japan since majority of the people who draws and writes comics cannot be a pro. They create their comics as their hobbies. Having dreams and goals are of course a great thing, but you should keep in mind that reality is pretty harsh.

I want you to be realistic. If you really want to work in Japan, first you need the work ethic of working 12~16 hours doing nothing but drawing with your assistants every day. And you must have some really tight drawing skill. And you need to produce works in a very consistent quality. And there are already thousands of skilled hopefuls in Japan already. They already have a huge talent pool with possibly much better drawing skills than you do.
