What is a portfolio? What can you put in a portfolio, any creative ideas?

I am currently doing a project for uni and it would help me out a lot if I could get some peoples responses about what a portfolio is to them. Or even some interesting, creative uses for a portfolio. Any responses are appreciated! thanks :)

A portfolio is a folder which holds your best work. What is your best work? I'm sorry but that really is a personal consideration. Obviously if your best work is not well executed then people will not be impressed. However that doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't be there. If you are studying art then you should be creative and think outside your limits. A portfolio is a folder which holds your best work. Now decide what those words mean. Hint, "a" is a word which has a generally agreed meaning.
