How to Cartoonize A Picture With GIMP?
-
Hey, I would like to know how I can cartoonize a picture using the program GIMP. I have an example here of what I want to do. If you can tell me how to cartoonize it, plus turn it black and white like the example pic, I'd very much appreciate it! Thanks. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/6/examplezt.jpg/

Answer:
Well there is a cartoon filter in GIMP which can give kind of instant results. Just open your image in GIMP (File > Open), then click Colours > Desaturate > OK to remove the colour. Then click Filters > Artistic > Cartoon - move the sliders until you get the effect you want, then click OK. You can also get a slightly more advanced Cartoon filter for GIMP for free here: http://gmic.sourceforge.net/gimp.shtml - download and install the G'MIC plugin and you will find the cartoon filter under Filters > G'MIC > Artistic > Cartoon. This filter has lots more sliders to play with, and you can get quite good results. Here's an example with the G'MIC Cartoon filter: http://oi53.tinypic.com/s1jl7p.jpg Another method would be to turn it into a proper vector drawing in something like Inkscape, which is a free open source vector image editor. There is even a way in Inkscape to automatically generate vectors from a bitmap image. You might want to check it out here: http://www.inkscape.org - here's a video showing how to use Auto Trace in Inkscape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dB6-S6zgb0

You can't. Cartooning is actually something that you have to do yourself. Just outline the parts that you want in black on one layer and then make the background white with whatever other stuff you want.

I still use my trusty copy of CS3, but assuming GIMP is similar, you'd have to trace the image with the pen tool. Then, you can add a 2 px black stroke to the path, and fill in the rest. You might use different thicknesses with different parts of the image rather than doing it all at once to make it look how you want. I don't think there are any filters that will do it for you, but some might make it easier. Look on Youtube for pen tool tutorials if you don't know how to use the pen tool, trying to teach yourself from scratch is difficult.
