How to start off in Graphic Design?

How to start Graphic Design?

  • I love stuff by Mark Weaver http://mrkwvr.com/#53141/MSCED-Series-Two or http://www.nigelevandennis.com/ http://www.stevenharrington.com/site.html http://www.miraruido.com/ http://www.ashkahn.com/ I want to learn how do all that! But I have no clue how to! and I have no clue where to start or what to search for! and I feel like an idiot, ha. So do you have any idea where I should start? Including resources?

  • Answer:

hey - interesting stuff!! mark weaver's work looks a bit similar to the style of my teacher murray tinkleman (tinkelman?) - and the miraruido site was far out. i'd say, if you have the creative juices (and you must if you're into this stuff) - go get yourself a copy of photoshop - or adobe creative suite if you can afford it. even if that's not what weaver uses, it's what *you* should use. photoshops really easy to learn - if you struggle figuring stuff out on your own, you can take a short course (weeks, not months - don't get ripped off). it's basically a program that lets you mess around with images - either photos of your own, or scanned images you tear out of magazines, or stuff you grab off the web. you can cut, paste, color, put text over, change size, etc. but that's half of the work. creativity is the bulk of this art style. i'd recommend reading a lot - making editorial art from newspaper articles that interest you - current events you're emotionally involved in - something along those lines. practice practice practice. once you're comfortable with YOUR style, get a portfolio together and call up art directors for magazines or publishers where you've seen similar work printed. your portfolio should have work that you're happy with - and preferably work that's presented as if it *had* been published - like with fake text blocks, or a fake article title. or you could go the gallery route and find a gallery who fits your style and sell yourself. either way - homegrown art is best - any art school will tell you, it's not a degree, it's your portfolio that will get you a job. best to you

it depends on how far you want to go. You could go to a two year or 4 year school. and macs with adobe suite is pretty much the standard.
