What to feed my Hedgehog?

  • I ran out of food today and the new shipment of hedgehog food will arrive in two days. I've been feeding my male 16 week old hedgehog (tobi) cooked kashi rice pilaf and carrots with some meal worms thrown in (4 tonight). is this recipe acceptable until his real food comes in?

  • Answer:

Hedgies can eat almost anything. Obviously you need to watch the fat and salt content, but almost any natural food would be fine. Cooked chicken, eggs (hardboiled or scrambled), fresh or frozen fruits and veggies that have been steamed make great hedgehog meals. My Jake doesn't have teeth (thanks, former owner) and he loves baby food. Also, a specialty high quality cat food can sometimes supplement a diet program. Rice is a filler with not much nutritional value for hedgies and you may want to watch the amount of mealworms. They are more of a treat than diet mainstay. Yummy, but fatty.
