How do you go about getting bonded?

Is this pen suitable for a bonded pair of regular sized rabbits?

  • Hello, I'm planning on getting a bonded pair of rabbits. I'm hoping to go to an animal shelter and find an already bonded pair of bunnies that suit me the best. I already know lots about the care of rabbits and i have 1 male mixbreed rabbit who was my first ever rabbit and i got him when he was 3.5 years old and know he's about 7-8 years old. So im looking at the http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Zinc-Indoor-Outdoor-Exercise/dp/B0002AT2IE/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top to keep them in. I have my other bunny in a hutch but i think keeping these bunnies inside or in this larger pen would keep them more happy and healthy and my other rabbit is pretty lazy and whenever i let him outside or inside my house he goes to a certain spot Inside is under my floor tom for my drumset, and outside is under a specific bush which he just digs and sits under! hahahahaha. I think it was because his old owner kept him in such a small cage and he didnt get much excersise. So would this pen work for two rabbits and what size height would you reccomend? I'm thinking the 36" and i would litter box train them like Frodo (my other bunny) and would give them lots of toys, tunnels, and other fun things for them in their cage. Also if i were to line the floor with like a fleece blanket or a sheet, would it be fine if i changed it once a week and just dust it with a duster to get any hay or droppings that didn't end up in the litter box.

  • Answer:

36" is the recommended height. Some will jump but I have found if you don't keep anything like boxes near the edge (I keep mine along the back wall) they can't get out. If you plan to line it with fabric you need to make sure they aren't eating it. Some rabbits love to chew on cloth. I use lino under the pens and a low pile rug on one side. Fabric will catch any mess they make. If fleece it is difficult to get hay off of I usually take mine outside and beat it with a broom. That is a great pen depending on the size of the rabbits. I use two of those connected since my rabbits are hyper and like to zoom around their pen a lot.

I had a foster once that could jump a 36 inch pen like nobodys' business. I found I had to clothes pin a sheet over the top or he would be running the house and getting into all kinds of trouble within 5 minutes flat. The buns would absolutely be happier, more comfortable and safer indoors. Hey pets are for companionship and enjoyment and unless you live in your backyard you are not experiencing the true joy of having one right? I always fist lay down a remnant piece of linoleum under the pen to protect the floor then lay a sheet or fleecy down I just shake them out over the compost pile and throw them in the washer. ( keep an eye though as some love to chew them). Once upon a time Pier one used to sell those straw mats that come tied together with jute pretty cheaply and those were just ideal.
