How to get rid of Hermit Crab mites?

How can I get my hermit crab a new home?

  • I have a hermit crab that I feel I can no longer keep. He has so far been alone in his cage because he attacks any other crabs I introduce to him. I have heard it is inhumane to keep a hermit crab by himself because they are very social creatures and without other crabs will live a very lonely life. Because he seems to be hostile toward other crabs but I still don't want him to be alone, I am trying to find a way to get him a new home but don't know how. I live very close to a beach and am wondering if i could take him there and if perhaps he would find other crabs or if there's a way I could find a hermit rescue organization? Any and all ideas would help, thanks!

Hermit crabs do not breed in captivity so everyone at every store is from the wild, from large capture operations, rather unfortunately. That being said, they are caught as tiny little guys and it's not a good idea to release them once they've been taken into captivity. Plus, you cant be sure what ocean they're from usually and they can die if put into the wrong tempreture/location. I suggest you post an online ad for your crab on Craigslist.org for your city/state in the pets section. Craigslist is free to use, easy to navigate, and you dont need an account. I've adopted a bunch of pets from there and it's great... so yeah, I would do that. Or you can email/call an animal shelter in your area. Having worked at shelters, you'd be surprised how many rare pets like hermit crabs, iguanas, rabbits, etc we take in each year.
