What are the consequences of brothers and sister constantly fighting?

My hamsters are fighting!!! Even though they are sister and possibly brother!!!?

  • I got my hamsters from a friend and they were both from the same parents. I expected that there probably won't be any fights because of that. Its been two months since their birth and now their starting to fight. I just found out that one of them has skin missing on his/her butt. One of my hamsters are skinny and the other is fat. There names are Houdini and Secret (brothers names...). I was told that usually the fat one is female and the male one is skinny and the male usually is dominant in the home, but the "male" one is the one that is bleeding on its butt (not anymore). They both fight over the wheel and usually the "male" one wins and the female just runs around the cage. I never really saw them fight for food. And also, when the "female" one is able to get on the wheel, it always manages to scare the "male" away...What should i do?!!!

    Despite what you see in pet shops, most hamsters, except dwarfs really, should really live alone. Most will fight even if they are from the same family. Please get a separate cage for one of them before 1 of them gets killed. Unfortunately I made this mistake and it happened to mine as a young child.

You should separate them if they're fighting so bad. My friend had two hamsters in the cage, both female, and one ate the other....so unless you want this to happen to your hamsters i suggest you separate them. Plus, if they're male and female they'll start breeding. Yes, they might be brother and sister but its never stopped hamsters before, and im sure that you dont want babies.

They are probably play fighting, And it doesn't matter to a hamster if they are brethren, they will still fight. If they are not play fighting i suggest putting a divider in they middle of the cage. You could also separate them.
