What are the pros and cons of having a pet rabbit?

Would a rabbit or a chinchilla make a better pet for me?

  • Hi! I'm a teenager and I might be getting a rabbit or a chinchilla soon, but I'm not sure which one to get. I heard that chinchillas aren't that friendly and don't like to cuddle. I wanted a playful pet that likes to explore and play with you and doesn't have a tendency to bite a lot. Which one would be easier to get used to you? Which one bonds to you more? And what are the pros and cons of each one? Is it true that rabbits go through a mean stage when they hit puberty? Thanks!

  • Answer:

I would suggest rabbits. I have had numerous rabbits, and they all love to explore, they're very playful, and they also love to cuddle. In the Agri-science lab at my high school, we do have chinchillas, and they do seem to be not as friendly as the rabbits. They spend most of their time sleeping. Rabbits do hit a little rebellious stage when they hit puberty, but usually by the time they're a year old, that phase is kind of over. You can also get your rabbit fixed at 6 months of age, which helps with the rebellious stage. Oh, if you plan to get two rabbits, get them together. Once rabbits are older, they may not get along with other rabbits, especially if they're the same gender and they aren't fixed. Good luck with your new pet :)

My husband and I have two chinchillas and I had rabbits when I was growing up. Chinchillas are very funny, but they don't always like to play with people. What I love about them, though is they are nocturnal, so by the time my husband and I get home from work, they are ready to wake up and start to get more active. Its nice for us because that way we can play with them while we're home and they aren't really lonely while we're at work all day because they sleep during that time anyway. They do tend to nibble a lot and get kind of testy when they aren't in the mood to play but they are hilarious to watch and when they are in the mood to play they are a blast. They are very curious little things so they like to try to get to everything they can so be aware of any wires when you have them out of their cage. Also, same as with rabbits, if you want more than one, get them together so that they bond young. Rabbits were fun while I was younger and were easier to take care of at that time. They were a little more playful, but still had their little moods when they didn't want to be played with. Whichever one you pick, just make sure you have time to bond with them because that is very important. For both animals, neither will want to play with you much if they aren't familiar with you.
