Could my hamster be pregnant?

Pregnant Hamster OR Just Strange?

  • Just wondered wheather any body could help me? I bought a syrian hamster about a week ago now. When i got it, i asked what "sex" it was. I got told by one member of staff it was a girl, but then by another member that it was a boy. My hamster was in a cage with 2 defiant boys as they check their sex out too. 1 of the other hamsters when i watched in the pet shop kept humping my one. :|! The lady in the shops words were " i hope im not giving you a pregnant hamster!!!" ..I've done abit of research, and read that they are meant to make a nest? Well my hamster has started taking all it's bedding up to its tube. She/he has a perfectly good house which its never been in not even to nose about :S. Theres loads of food underneath the bedding and in it in the tubes too. Can anyone help me??? Do you think i have a pregnant hamster or one that prefers a small tube to it's big house ! Thanks

  • Answer:

I used to have regular hamsters, and there did this with their tubes. I think they just like to move their fluff around. I also had a hamster that was pregnant. She made a small nest with fluff near the food and began to become very territorial and extremely fat, she soon had babies. So if it doesnt give birth soon, then I think you are okay. You just have a hamster that wants to make his home comfy.

you will have to wait and see if she gets bigger but if she is pregnaut be prepared that she will most likely kill and eat her babies because she is stressed. give her all the food she can eat and if she does have the babies take out her wheel, give her some toilet paper to nest also. they are pregnaut for about 3-4 weeks. do not clean the cage for about 1-2 weeks after the birth just add shavings and toilet paper and do not touch the babies until they are walking around on their own since she will for sure kill them. make sure she is nursing them and not ignoring them which is why you remove the wheel if she has them. also make sure she has a house, not a tube to have them in if she prefers that. give her yogurt and cottage cheese for calcium for the next couple weeks along with after giving birht for 2-3 weeks.
