Mini Lop Rabbit Problems?
-
My Mini Lop, Peanut is almost one year old now. I got her from a reputable breeder and she had barely any aggression issues until a month or two ago. I got her when she was only nine weeks old and she's been a good eater since she was little. Almost a week ago, she started eating about half as much as usual, and lashing out at my hand (drawing blood every time) when I put it too close to her. 1)Is this aggression normal for the Mini Lop breed? 2)What can I do to help her eat more? 3)How do I stop her aggression? I can't have a rabbit who makes me bleed every time I try to touch her... Spaying is not an option because I show her once in a while. *she has toys in her cage to play with, but she mostly seems intent on smashing them until they are 'dead' and taking her anger out on little plastic jingle balls. Thank you!

Answer:
hi their , hope i can till you something to do the mini Lops are usually pretty good rabbits but something has up set her to strike out at you ,has their been any dogs trying to get at her if she is being nasty i see she is about a yr. old ok here your problem she is wanting babies or to be put with a buck she horney im pretty sure and you make her mad because you dont see it . if you breed her may be she will calm down. try it ,if you dont wont her breed then tell her no loudly and even take a rolled up news paper and smack her one time see if she stops then pick her up to show her who's boss its not mean its putting you in control not her.

i have a little black mini lop. the reason she may be aggessive is because she needs to be speyed. this can be done at your local small animal vet clinic. but it can cost a fair amount. but its defs worth it! (just noticed you said its not an option. - but can u show her if she is spyed. i understand you need to fix these behaviour problems to show her) if you dont want to try this first, i suggest you keep ontop of cleaning the hutch, making sure that you have heaps of fresh hay in there, which is essential! that you change the water often and top it up. other reasons may be due to diet, pellets are not good to give a lots of, they need to be mixed up with oaten hay and luccen. but you proberly know what type of foood you should be feeding her anyway. i give my rabbit heaps of boc choy and carrots as i found she loves them. does your rabbit get lots of exercise running around outside her hutch?? that may be an issue? lastly it probs is hard, but lots of cuddles and pats (even tho u said u cant) human contact wiht them would help. i hope this helps, this is just stuff ive heard from the vets. let us know how things go!
I agree that if she is suddenly behaving and eating abnormally, get her checked by a vet! Some rabbits become more territorial when they mature. Does she mostly bite when she is in her cage? Maybe she needs more time out of her cage and more interaction with you. Spend more time petting her all over, if you can, so it feels normal and safe for her. Give her treats to encourage her. I've met some rabbits that are really mean when in their cage and really nice when out of it. As far as eating goes, if she is maintaining her weight she is getting enough. Give her all-she-can-eat timothy hay. Offer pellets as a supplement to that. And don't forget to try different kinds of veggies and occasionally small bits of fruit. (my rabbits were nuts for apples)
You might want to get her checked by a vet. Behaviour changes, especially when accompanied by dietary changes, can mean there are other things going on. Rabbits are very good at hiding pain, but may lash out because they are not feeling well. A check up at a rabbit savvy vet is a good place to start to help rule out medical problems. Another thing I would ask is if she could be pregnant. Pregnant does can be moody. If she has been around males in the last month, she could be pregnant or be having a false pregnancy. If she is not pregnant and is healthy, you would need to consider what to do. You can live with the aggression, get her spayed (you still have a pet but not a show rabbit), or euthanize her. Giving her up should not be an option as you would just be passing off your problem onto someone else and it is devastating to have to give up your pet. Remember that an aggressive rabbit will be hard to show as she could be DQ'ed if she is aggressive with a judge. You can also try working with her. Wear long sleeves and heavy gloves when you have to go into her cage. This way it won't hurt as much if she does bite or scratch. Don't take you hand out of the cage if she does go to bite as she need to learn that the behaviour will not get her what she wants. It can also be good to see if she is aggressive outside of her cage.
I have had a lop rabbit for 7-8 years and he has never eaten a lot, I believe they are not heavy eaters. My other rabbit is Flemish-giant rex and she eats like a horse. Lops are known to eat less than most rabbits. Also the aggression thing may be from the feed you give her. For example some people believe that if an animal has to much protein they become more aggressive. I personally feed them Festa mix rabbit. Hope it helps!
