Where can I buy wild rabbit food?

Is it okay to give a 3 month old Holland Lop adult rabbit pellet food?

  • Today I needed to buy some more pellet food for my bunny, and they ran out of the brand that he normally eats, being desperate I bought a food that was similar to the one he eats now. But, I guess I didn't read the label well enough and fed him his normal portion earlier today. I have been watching him today with the new food and he seems to love it. But, I just noticed on the bag it stated for adult rabbits 12 months and above. He is a house rabbit, doesn't go outside, and is a pet only. He is the only rabbit and not being bred. Otherwise he is happy and healthy with no problems. He just went to the vet 2 weeks ago for his first check up. I kind of don't want to have to go out an buy a new bag of food as it can add up very quickly. He is also a very picky bunny and finding this food and he actually eating it was kind of a miracle. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much for your help in advance.

  • Answer:

A rabbit food for adult rabbits contains less vitamins and fibre which can cause enteritis in young rabbits due to lack of fibre. It is therefore necessary to supplement his food with vitamin drops in the water (Hagen Vitasol is good) and loads of hay. If it is the same brand of food it should other wise be easily digested. It is incorrect that someone said to feed unlimited amounts of food as your rabbit will quickly become obese and can also get GI Statis where the gut stops working due to being overloaded. Rabbit guts are very sensitive at this age and should be fed 2 to 3 times a day pellets and unlimited hay. Vegetables should be avoided until 14 weeks of age. Greens in particular and vegetables containing carbohydrates can cause mucoid enteritis.

You have to be extremely careful when changing food that suddenly. A rabbits digestive track is very sensitive and an instant change in food could actual harm him very much! Normally when changing food you give small portion by small portion mixing the normal food with the new food adding more of the new food each day. Though the age of the rabbit is not that big of a deal I would be concerned about how fast you switched over foods. Try introducing the food very slowly. Then seeing as your rabbit is only 3 months old you should be giving it an unlimited amount of pellets so it gets the right nutrition. When around 7-12 moths of age start measuring the amount given. ( one ounce per pound of pellets a day) If you need more info feel free to email me [email protected]
