Can anyone give me information on alfalfa hay and oats hay?

Why doesn't my holland lop eat much hay?

  • My holland lop has hay all the time, when I first got him I fed Timothy's grass hay but he didn't eat much so I started giving him alfalfa since my grandfather grows and bales it but lately I stopped giving it to him because my grandfathers hay hasn't been the best so I gave him grass hay and again he wouldn't eat much. So I now give him orchard grass hay but he still doesn't eat much. He always has pellets and water and a couple times a day I give him a little less than 1 tablespoon of oats or a few yogurt treats.

  • Answer:

I ever come across an article in england that says never to feed yoghurts drop to rabbits. and all the comments above are right.. never give dry food as the main course, think of it as treats.. and for treats..it is better you give it fresh carrots or allowable fruits. go for mother nature.

A fully grown rabbit should not have pellets in front of him all day long.mine get 1/3 cup plus hay.unless hes a baby 4 months or less.

Grass hay or timothy hay is the best, don't feed him alfalfa hay, it's too high in energy and too low in fiber. Give him only a tiny amount of pellets, small enough amount for it too not fill him up, then leave unlimited amount of hay and when he gets hungry, he'll eat it and hopefully get him into a habbit of eating it everyday along with his pellets and vegies.

He is already getting a high quality, high protein diet and probably too much of it. The timothy hay or orchard grass hay should be the best choice, alfalfa hay on top of pellets is really too rich a diet for him and he will get fat. Cut the treats to one thing per day and only one time per day. You don't want to kill him with kindness. Hollands are very smart so try teaching him some tricks using the treat foods as rewards. Good for his brain and good for extra exercise and fun time with your bunny.

pellets are a bit like chocolate for rabbits - if they have the choice of pellets of hay they'll always go for the pellets. That's probably why your rabbit isn't eating much hay. Try gradually limiting the pellets until you're only on an eggcup full a day. That should get him eating more hay, which is beneficial for his digestive and dental health :) Alfalfa hay is more of a treat for bunnies as it's high in calcium and quite fattening for adult bunnies. Stick to the timothy if you can.
