How Can I Convince My Parents To Let Me Get A Ferret?

  • Im 13 years old and I really want a Ferret. I know everything about them! I have spent countless hours researching them and I have spent over 120 dollars on books about them! We could easily afford a ferret and I could save up and pay for him if I needed to! I had a Hamster but he passed away last Summer and I had a dog but, my dad hated her so we had to put her up for adoption after having her for 2 years! My dad is fine with me getting a ferret as long as my snowboarding, school, and youtube career don't crash and burn. (My passions are film making for youtube which I am a "partner and I have a lot of views and Im on the CO snowboard team. Which I'm done with after this spring. And, i am 2 grades ahead in Math already which is his favorite subject. My Mom supports everything I do and is very close with me and if it were any other animal she would help me convince my dad but she thinks there gross giant rats! I have the space for a Ferret. I know everything about them. I am very responsible. And, yet my mom still says no. She thinks the odor would be overwhelming but I know it won't be. My best friend also has 2 ferrets and my teacher has 1! Plz help me out! (No smart *** replies.)

    As a owner of three ferrets, I have to say that they are a big responsibility. If you have just one ferret, you need to devote a lot of time to him. They need a lot of socializing. My ferret was fine being the only one for a year, but after that, he got lonely. So I had to get him a friend (I adopted an abandoned baby), and a year after that, they were fighting a lot so I had to add a third. Now it's ferret harmony, but I have three. The odor isn't overwhelming, but you do have to clean the cage once a week and bath them once a month, if they need it. I'm an adult, working, and going to medical school, but I still have enough time to devote to my ferrets. They are not aggressive, but they do play a lot (similar to kittens). If you get a big cage for him and are willing to devote the time for him, then get a ferret! They're great and you won't regret it. However, I do worry about your dad not liking the dog and getting rid of her. Would he do the same to your ferret? Ferrets get very attached to their owners and being separated from you could cause him depression.

Tell your parents everything you know about ferrets. That way you can prove to them that you are ready and responsible. Also, the smell shouldn't be a problem, especially if you clean their litter boxes regularly and they are de-scented. Also, tell your mother that they are not rats, and if she doesn't like rats then she should like ferrets, because ferrets are carnivores (members of the weasel family) and some are even fed a diet of mice and rats!

If she's worried bout the smell just get it descented & keep his cage & himself VERY clean & she should have no problem! Trust me I was just like her & now have 2!!

tell her you will keep it very clean and it won't smell. you can use candles to help with any smell.

First be sure you want a ferret. They can be a little aggressive at times and can stink.... a lot. They also require a lot of medical attention, which leads to a big bill. Honestly, in my opinion, I would get rats. They are very smart (have the intelligence of a 2 year old HUMAN), easy to train, don't stink, and its very rare for them to bite or be aggressive. The only problem is that you have to get 2+ rats. But if you are sure about getting a ferret, then you just have to ask your mom about some other reasons why she doesn't want you to get rats.
