What are some popular Canadian free ad websites, similar to Craigslist?

What do you think about getting a pet from Craigslist?

  • Some people say getting a pet from Craigslist is bad because they are buying them, thus supporting breeding/buying, and not adopting. Others say it is good because they are getting a pet that would otherwise be going to a shelter anyways. What is your opinion? I have mixed feelings about this. I think it is a good idea because u can get a pet before it goes to a shelter. Bad: some people abuse the websites and charge ridiculous fees for an animal that is not neutered, thus perpetuating the cycle of unwanted pets when those same animals reproduce themselves. I got a kitten from Craigslist 3yrs ago. I got him his shots and got him neutered. I later saw an ad for my kittys brother, the girl wrote that he was gonna be taken to the pound if he was not bought. So i feel that my kitty would have been taken to the pound too if i had not bought him.

  • Answer:

I got 2 guinea pigs from craigslist, and I'm glad I did. I went to pick them up, and the lady lived in trailer home that was terrible. Literally every wall was covered in tiny cages and the odor was terrible. The guinea pigs were in cages no more than 1 foot by 1 foot and no more than 6 inches tall. The living conditions were horrible. I wish I could've gotten more, but I only had enough for 2 piggies. She had puppies in cages the same size! And a freakin goat on a goat crap coated front porch. It was just plain wrong and I'm glad we got them out of there!

If you actually adopt then its ok to get pets off craigslist. You just want to watch out for breeders. Its usually obvious which ads are breeder ads. I have gotten a dog and a rabbit off craigslist. They were both from people who could no longer have them. The person I got the rabbit from had a mold problem in her house and she didn't want the rabbit to get sick. The dog was from a person who's son has asthma and the dog made it worse. So in those cases it was a good thing. They could of ended up in shelters and the dog, Oscar, would of been put to sleep because he is 10 years old. So just watch out for breeder ads. EDIT: The problem with breeders on craigslist is they are back yard breeders. When people say go to a breeder they mean a reputable breeder. Not a BYB.

I really don't see the problem with breeders. Everyone online tells me that breeders are the best, or adopting from a shelter is really good. I got a hedgehog on Craigslist for $60 which was a great price for a hedgehog because around here a hedgehog is $200. The poor hedgehog I got from this lady lived in a 10 gallon, and was really small for it's age. I adopted him though and he is doing better. At first he was really mean and aggresive. All animals on Craigslist aren't bad at all. I would go to a shelter first before buying on there though.

i love buying animals because they are pure breed if you get them from someone that is trustfull but if you want a kitten they are sometimes free in Craigslist i got one a month ago and you shouldnt feel guilty

DA UNKNOWN

I would rather my money go to a shelter than some private person. Plus when adopting from an animal shelter I'm guaranteed a pet that's vaccinated, altered, and micro-chipped, and they comes with a free vet check at my personal vet as well. They also turn over the behavior information questionnaire from the prior owners, and their behaviorist's assessment of the pet, and guarantee it to be free of contagious illness (and if something shows up within two weeks, they treat it free). Plus the majority of pets that are posted on Craigslist aren't being re-homed. There's near constant litters of puppies and kittens being sold and I won't support that kind of breeding. Most of those that aren't babies are being "re=homed" for stupid reasons- like "I have to move" or "my new puppy is aggressive towards my senior pet" (so I'll get rid of the senior), or "my 6 month old puppy is too high energy for my toddler" (didn't you know you had a kid??). I'm not handing over money to some irresponsible pet owner, nor would I make it easy for these people to get rid of their pets by taking one, even for free. Our local shelter is no-kill, and any behaviorally sound animal with no major medical conditions will end up in a home if surrendered.

Craigslist is a subjective case. Animals are both advertised by breeders with entire litters, and by people who want to rehome one of their pets. The difference is WHO you are buying from. If you are buying from a breeder, yes you are supporting breeding pets over adopting from shelters. And if you are interesting in an animal that is being rehomed, that's a totally different case. The animal is unwanted for one reason or another, so it should NOT be a "sale". I understand that many people hike up the adoption fees to the point of it being a profitable sale, but this is really just the few people that do abuse ignorant buyers. The idea of rehoming an animal over a site like craigslist is to find another person to take it as priority, not make money. The adoption fee should be small, just so the animal doesn't fall into really bad hands. If someone is (to put it bluntly) buy, say, a $300 kitten, when they could very well pay $50, that's their own mistake for maybe not researching enough :/
