How do I make a window in Java?

Hello, i need help with java fern care?

  • I am raising a java fern, it is young, but now its turning yellow and black. So i have a filter containing carbon (the filter is top fin 10) so im pretty sure the fern has enough carbon. The light in my tank is 15 watts with 2 incadesnet (i forgot how to spell) lightbulbs. And the tip of the java fern is 4 inches away from the light bulbs. i dont have any fertilizers in my tank right now and i think i should probably get some.......... The tank is still in cycle and i think im gonna need to isolate the plant So this is how its gonna work 1)im gonna take the java fern out and put it in a cup 2)im gonna spread decomposed grass fertilizer(dried) around the java fern's root 3)im gonna take some tank water and fill the cup up until the surface reaches the tip of the java fern 4)im gonna set the fern by the window (with natural sunlight for 8 hours) and leave it be until i get my first 2 fish for a week to make their poop as fertilizer for my java fern and my fish's breathing out co2 will become a photosynthesis ingrediant for my java fern. 5) and after one week of my fish living in my tank, i will put back my java fern into my tank. So is this a good procedure for the growth of my java fern? Thank you so much :D

  • Answer:

    1. your tank does not have the right lights to grow plants 2. you do not need fertilizer if you don't have enough light, plants that are dieing don't use fertilizer 3. too much waste and fertilizer will just grow algae and smother the plant. 4. plants with enough light will show new growth, plants without enough light will get yellow, rot and die. 5. your fern will grow better in the cup in the window than it ever will in your tank. EDIT : You've had these suggestions from me and other people already, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqEle1I_qd8DkRT0uYdljHPsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20110704111551AAOMGXG although one person said you could do it with incandescent bulbs by running them longer and this is false. Additional time your lights are on , will not be any better. You cannot grow plants successfully with incandescent bulbs. And your problem is not lack of fertilizer or whether you have carbon or not. You've obviously done some research, but you are confused about what you've read and are hung up on the carbon being important, but are ignoring the need for the right spectrum of lighting.. If you stuffed your tank with plants and set it in a window, you might get them to grow and then you might need fertilizer, but one or two java ferns do not need fertilizing beyond what the fish poop out except occasionally. .

incandescent is not full spectrum. Plants need full spectrum lighting to survive. You need to switch your lighting to something in the 6500kelvin range. And ,java fern roots to driftwood and such so you should make sure the roots are always free, never buried. And, having planted tanks for some time, I dont believe carbon has any effect good or bad on the plants. Do not add fertiliser! particularly something organic that will decompose like your suggesting,it will do more harm to your water chemistry than good.
