How do you know when pink convict cichlids are paired?

Im stocking my 20 gallon tank and i want cichlids?

  • Ok so i have an over-powerful filter (150 gallons an hour) a heater, thermometer, gravel, and 2 decorations. I know that you have to have rocks and caves for the cichlids and i wil definitely add them. My tank water is still cycling and im going to test it tomorrow. I have to Khuli Loaches in my 10 gallon and im going to transfer them to this one. I would eventually get rid of them before i add the cichlids. the cichlids i want are: Cockatoo Cichlid, Convict Cichlid, German Blue Ram, and Electric yellow. Would this work or would they all kill each other? I heard the rule of thumb is one inch of full grown fish per gallon of water and that's not completely full. If this doesn't work then what cichlids would? If i couldn't have any cichlids at all then what are some other fish i could put in for a community tank? I would LOVE to have Angelfish. Help!

just be careful with the size difference...the bigger ones may gang up on a smaller one and kill it

You should be ok with those cichlids, but you can't have them with angel fish(I think you knew that). With cichlids they will be less aggressive if you have a slightly over crowded tank, as it takes away their ability to be territorial. Also some are more aggressive than others, even of the same breed look for the calm tanks. I have one african cichlid in with my platties and have no problems with him but he was from a very quiet tank.

Those cichlids are from differing geographical areas, and very differing needs for water quality, and behaviors. I am not a cichlid expert, at all, but I've had success with several tanks when I keep them to a single species, or a single region at least - meaning, in a 30 tank I have been successful with (S American) 5 anglefish/2 cory cat/1 bristlenose pleco...in another 30 gal I have been successful with 2 (Malawi African) yellow lab/1 demansoni/3 kribensis... and I have been successful in keeping Gold Severum in a community tank 55 gal (no other cichlids) just mollies, pleco, and cory cats.. In the process of setting up a (fascinating) Tanganyika/shell dwellers tank.. I recommend finding the fish you like most, and researching for tank mates that are compatible in behavior and water needs.
