What is the best way to fix aquarium pH levels?

  • I am just wondering what the best way to fix pH levels in my 35 gallon aquarium. It has been without fish since July and I am ready to put new fish in, but the pH and alkalinity are extremely low. I don't want to mess with chemicals if the better fix would be to start over with cleaned rock and new water. Thanks for any advice.

    Low pH and alkalinity just means you have soft / low pH tap water. There is probably no need to "fix" this, and if you do start adjusting the levels then you will be doing it again every water change. It is possible to add buffers to raise the pH, hardness and alkalinity, but don't bother unless you need to, and like I said, you will need to then treat all new water going into the tank to keep conditions stable. Better to just choose fish that LIKE soft low pH water. Tetras, Amazon area cichlids, cory catfish, loaches etc LIKE that sort of water. African lake Cichlids or Mollies for example would not be a good choice for that sort of water. Ian

Never use a PH up or PH down chemical. If you want to change the PH, use things such as drift wood, live rocks, etc. Always do it the natural way, never ever use unneeded chemicals.

pH is something you have to check from time to time. I suggest a digital pH meter, about $35.00. If you prefer, you can get a cheaper kit at WalMart.
