Hello, i need help with how to make freeze dried bloodworms very healthy for my fish.?
-
I was told that my fish needs "meat" to live on longer and will probably feed them freeze dried bloodworms about every tuesday and friday for one meal. my sibling will only buy me freeze dried blood worms as they are cheaper. I've research countless times on how to make the freeze dried bloodworms NOT severe to my fish. I've heard cutting it up, pre-soaking it, dehydrating it, and all of these countless ways to "healthatize" the freeze dried bloodworms so the fish wont constipate and so the bloodworms wont clot in the fish's stomach. So if i treat the freeze dried bloodworms, do i have to do it to the WHOLE container then feed the fish all of the worms until its done (well, NOT all at once but whenever i will feed them)~if u get wat i mean OR do i have to take out the amount of worms going to be fed each meal then do the health proccess on the meal and repeat it each time i feed the fish? OH!!! PS so what is the procedure of how to "healthatize" the freeze dried bloodworms so it wuold be good health to the fish? Thank you so much :D

Answer:
If you are refering to the type of blood worm commonly sold in pet stores (midge lavae) then you shouldn't have to do anything other than feed. Most companies fortify the larvae with vitamins and the larvae themselves are great for extra protein and to simulate natural feeding behavior. If it is freeze dried you should be able to pick out single larvae. If it's frozen into flats or cubes you can soak in water and feed with a turkey baster, or cut off small sections with a knife if it's for a single fish. Hikari seems to have the best quality for both freeze dried and frozen, followed by omega one.

About the only thing you might want to do is to soak the worms for a few minutes before feeding them. This lets them gain some water, so they wont swell up it the fish's stomach after they eat them. Only treat the food for that feeding, once the food gets wet again it can start to decay. All that the freeze dried worms are is dried out. Freeze drying is a process that first freezes the food, then puts them in a vacuum so the ice sublimates directly to water vapour. This is faster and the food degrades less than normal drying. You can buy freeze dried food for humans too, usually for hiker, Mt climbers and emergency supplies. Because it's light to carry and lasts for ages. So basically, don't stress too much about it, just give your fish a treat of the bloodworms or similar a couple of times a week, and you will be doing things right. Ian
