What fish are poisonous?

What's a good type of fish could I get for this aquarium, if I have these fish already?

  • I recently got a 30-gallon fish tank and set it up all nicely, however, the person who sold me the fish that I wanted wasn't so knowledgeable and a good number of them died overnight in the bucket I was advised to keep them in while my tank ran for another day. The fish I currently have are doing just fine, though, so thankfully, no worries for the time being. I have the following in this tank already: - 1 Peacock Eel - 2 Catfish (forgot what kind they are offhand) - 3 Odessa Barbs - 1 Auratus Cichlid (Female) - 1 Cichlid (forgot what kind - not Auratus - but it's a male) They all seem to be getting along just fine these past few days. Anyhow, one of the fish who died was a different type of full-grown cichlid that was black and blue and very pretty. It's one of the fish I sort of mainly wanted. I am looking to get 1 or 2 more fish that are or will become a good size - I'm thinking ones that'd grow up to about 5-6 inches long. However, I know next to nothing about fish, and as such I am not sure what will get along with these types of fish, or what's common/pretty/affordable. I'd pay $20 for a good-looking, 'fun' fish that'd coexist with these ones well, maybe a few bucks more depending on what it is, exactly, but can anybody offer me some advice?

i dont want to sound rude, my intent is only to educate, so i apologize if it sounds that way at all... and it will be long, so sorry for that too... *it sounds like your tank could be very new... if the employee told you to hold off for another day, its probably because the tank has only been set up for a few days or maybe a week or 2... am i on track so far? *now, if you added all those fish at one time, you probably have a HUGE ammonia spike going on... since it is a new tank, there is no way the biological filter can keep up with that many fish at one time. ****this is probably the MOST important thing i can tell you. Please go buy these 3 liquid water tests: Ammonia, Nitrites, and Nitrites.... just read the directions on how to do the tests (API is a trusted brand and is available at most petstores). when you do your tests...you should read ammonia=0. nitrites=0. and nitrates= more than 0 but less than 20. Anything else, and you will need to do an IMMEDIATE water change until you can read those levels. check the water levels daily, and if you get those "safe" readings for about 4 consecutive days, you will know your tank is safe for your fish.... if you dont keep an eye on these levels, your fish can quickly be killed. its like keeping you in a gas chamber and expecting you to live a long happy life. *about your fish stock, some of them will not do well together. cichlids are very agressive and the eel is a little more aloof, they both like to hide in caves... especially the eel... cichlids "claim territory" and if your eel is in their territory, which will usually be a cave, it will be killed... thats just the cichlids nature... the cichlids should have one cave for each cichlid (terracotta pots make great cheap caves) i learned this the hard way, i had cichldis and 2 eels, the eels were killed quickly, then i researched both fish and realized that is why. Now, about those cat fish, are they silvery with black polka dots and long wiskers? if so, those are pictus catfish... while they are adoreable, and they do very well with cichlids because they are fast swimmers and kind of fiesty, just remember they can reach a max size of 8" so just those 2 fish right there are over half of the max ammount of fish you should have in your tank (the # of inches of fish should = about 3/4 the number of gallons) that means if you have a 30 gal tank, you should have no more than like 20 total inches of fish... then you add the cichlids that can reach about 6 to 7"+ and then you start having crowding issues. cichldis dont tolerate crowded tanks... they will kill off other fish to make more room for themselves... and to be honest, the smaller and more shy fish will be the first to go... so the barbs and the eel. im sorry if it was a lot of info all at once, but if i were you id keep the 2 cichlids and a catfish... that would be sufficient space without the tank being overstocked

you should never get fish if you tank if it is not immediatly ready for them, fish should not be in buckets overnight waiting for you tank to cycle, especially sensative fish like ciclids. Did you even add a heater and air pump to the bucket? and did you acclimate the fish to the tank before adding them? ciclids are not for beginers either, many will grow very large and very aggressive. your tank is already overwhelmed and overstocked, a peacock eel will reach 12 inches and is a canivour that needs live and frozen food. barbs should be kept in groups of 5 or more. please dont add more fish, especially large fish. and please research BEFORE you buy fish. if you dont know the exact species of every fish in your tank, you can not keep fish, they will die. buying a pet is a serious responsibility

"I know next to nothing about fish" Please please please do some research before buying any more fish!! You said it yourself- you need more information. I found this book to be fun and informative. It tells all the basics and helps you choose compatable communities: http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Guide-Fresh-Water-Aquariums/dp/0793821010/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265689051&sr=8-7

"However, I know next to nothing about fish," Good laugh. Stop buying fish. Concentrate on what you have. Research now and when everything seems fine and stable. And if you think from your research you have space for more fish, then go for it. And then is where your research starts, Your absolutely stocked and your pushing it off the ledge.
